Well, it's not exactly cheap itself and it's a generation later; it better be faster than a GeForce GTX 580. While nVidia will need to concern themselves with it for the time being, AMD needs to concern themselves more with what the upcoming GeForce GTX 700 series may bring, as that'll be it's longer term competitor (no GeForce 600 series except for OEM parts, and yes, I'm finding nVidia's constant number skipping lame [the idea is that they skip a number for a new real architecture, but I don't like it]).

35% better performance per watt, 26% faster in general.
Solid gains from the 7970 and drivers will push it more.

Good gains, but the ball is in nVidia's court now.

Gotta say if nVidia drops the ball I might have to look at a 7770 or 7850 myself.

Every time I see cards like that packed so closely together, I cringe. They run hot enough on their own .

There's no reason to do it though (cringe i mean :P), since its only a test run not a permanent setup.

I do too. I mean...the cards are just breathing pure heat....I saw 2900XT's like that. Total, utter disaster.

I try to put at least 1 port between my GPU and any other addon cards I might have such as network pci or sound cards. So having them on top of each other like that is just nuts and I wouldnt do it.

I had my old Audigy 2 about that close to my Radeon HD4870 when I first built my i7. It idled at 94 C. Once I removed the Audigy, it dropped to about 60.

Precisely why you keep at least one port between components.

I know that now, that was in 2008 . It's the only reason I bought my X-Fi card, so I could use a PCIe slot farther away from the GPU. But that's why I don't like huge multi-GPU setups like that. They typically only work well with long-term stress with watercooling.

To be fair these days most gfx cards are so long that any extra cards next to them don't affect the cooling in the slightest but yeah I also try and leave a port free inbetween. (We need new board standards, the idea of 4 ports being invalidated by two GFX card sucks bigtime).

Yeah, that's how it is with my current 6970. My RAID controller is right below it, but it's shorter than the video card (and low profile), so it doesn't block the fan at all.

So is there no option to run a cool quad setup ? (other then maybe changing the fans to a liquid cooled enviroment) ?
