Movies from flash drive on tv?

Ok what I'm wanting to do is connect my flash drive to my TV through a usb to AV cable and watch movies stored on the drive on the TV.

Is it possible to install a media player on the drive and have it play movies automatically when connected to the TV?

I have an older tv (cable jack and AV plug-in)

VLC media player has a portable version....not sure how you would get it to or whether or not it would output to the TV though.

there would be no 100% straightforward way to do what your asking about without some sort of intermediary device to play the videos off of your flash drive. i always use my softmodded xbox with XBMC to play files over the network but i know the 360/ps3 can handle FAT16/FAT32 formatted flash drives as sources for pictures, music and video files.
i didn't suggest the the xbox w/ XBMC since i don't know how the xbox handles flash drives and that aren't FATX formatted.
