Post Sony PS3 manufacturing price reduction.

Just recently, the Japanese console maker has disclosed that they managed to further reduce PlayStation 3 console costs by a significant 70 percent, as compared to when it was first launched back to 2006.

Although the exact figure of how much it cost to build the system is unknown, but with the original estimated system cost of around $800, the new cost can be expected to stay at $240. If you recall, Sony was actually absorbing loss of $50 per console unit sold but was hoping to able to make profit with its gaming titles sold to consumer markets. The main contributor to the cost reduction is believed to be due to popularity and common use of Blu-ray drive which was way too expensive when available last two to three year time. Besides, the smaller processor technology with much stable mass production process and lesser yield loss are able to keep the cost further down as direct benefits to both manufacturer and consumers.

No firm date on when the actual selling price will be reflected yet, but this is definitely a good news for Sony PS3 fans that are looking to own an affordable console system as the cost reduction may potentially drive a ‘slim down’ version of PS3 at cheaper retail price soon.
So now there's a hint of a possible price drop. About time!

P.S. Link to the article not given on purpose.

Sony did right on Bluray. But the lost on the Cell. With IBM, Toshiba and others helping them, it's far too complicated. I will draw hate for this, but they well could have made a more powerful CPU by biting the bullet and going Intel.

On a side note, a page for the slim PS3 has appeared on the German Amazon site I heard. We all know it's coming this year eventually, what's interesting is how Sony still refuses to discuss the matter....

I think the slim version will be ****ed up and don't have some good features like the 60GB version.

I presume that we will have to initially wait for sony to recoup some of the costs for the console before they pass the savings onto the consumer. But that is good news for future buyers and hopefully, lower cost for repair jobs.

Lol, this reminds me that a friend just bought a PS3. It broke within 1 week; I lolled and played some Xbox.

Your statement makes me lol. Considering the 360s track record ranges from fail to catastrophic.

I fixed a broken one for $20. Beat that. Even if it blows in half a year it's worth the price. A $400 console that breaks in a week is just sad.

Your not gonna make someone pull out statistics to prove the fail in your statement right?

Lol, I like your style. I did the same when my PS3 broke. But if this 70% reduction is passed on, then replacing the laser which broke in mine will go from being $150(!) to around $45-50 to or so to replace through Sony repair centers, which is a fairly substantial saving if I do say so myself.

Which model did you have? My friends launch 60 gig yellowed after 2 years :/.

The cause was dog hair clogging the system though. :3

News flash: The models in production now are already missing card slots, usb ports, and backwards compatibility.

The original 60 gig model will cost you an arm and a leg, and is more likely to be faulty break than more recent models.

40gb model, I make sure that the area is dusted every other week and their is no hair or anything that can get stuck in there. That particular model had issues though, on warm and humid nights the fans would kick into high gear after 15 minutes of running time and would not stop. My new one hasn't had issues. Yet.

Coffs Harbour, Australia. The model I got was a problem child from day 1 and the only Sony product that has ever crapped out on me within a year.

So paying $20 for 6 months of fun is worse than paying $400 for 1 week of fun?

No, really. Go ahead and give me a big speech. I'm interested in hearing how you prove that statement wrong.

Lol
You fail because your assuming that a person WILL get a yellow light.
Unlike the 360 where 7 OUT OF 10(not exaggerated) will have a red light the ps3s fail rate is below 5%.

A long speech isn't required to explain the obvious.

With the 360 its not a matter of "IF", its a matter of "when".

The version of the 360 that can compete with the ps3 in terms of stability will cost you about.........

400 bucks, go figure.

I knew it. Anyways, i'll never buy the slim or 40Gb versions. 60GB () or 80GB.

The missing ports and card slots are irrelevant. You shouldn't have any qualms unless backwards compatibility is an issue for you.

and btw......having all 4 usb slots in use on a older model ps3 raises your chances of its power supply pawning you.

Well, I guessed as much. $240. Cell BE and the RSX together are already about 75% that. Cell BE actually about... over 60%.

We'll see $299.99 and $349.99 PS3 models really soon... Call it a hunch.
