So I uninstalled both the SMP and GPU client and got a program called FAH GPU Tracker v2, handles up to 8 GPUs and the SMP. More for convenience than anything else.
At first when I installed it, I had the same slowdown as before, nothing new there.
I also tried running with just the SMP on, no slowdown at all, even with the CPU at 100%.
But I figured I'd try something out. A few weeks ago, a game (dunno which) kept buggering me about turning down settings because a game was under-performing, so I had it turn off Aero.
The lag with the FAH GPU client was still there, and I couldn't be arsed turning Aero back on again.
Anyhow, I turned it back on again. Turned on the GPU client just to check, and low and behold, the lag is gone! At least for 15 minutes it has been...
This without any other change whatsoever.

Anyone got a plausible explanation for this?

The gpu client unlike the cpu one doesn't have the same flexibility when sharing resources between apps, and at the folding home site they suggest to close it before running a game for example. Unless something drastically changes i don't think that there won't be any slowdown with the gpu client when running other apps that utilize the gpu at the same time.

So Aero is considered a "drastic change"?

My i7 920 (D0) churned out 1800 PPD (0->10%) on stock settings, time to see how much it increases at 3.6GHz. (1.275 vcore, 170 bckl)
My trusty old 275 GTX manages ~8.5k for now, not too shabby.

The problem resides in either the FAH client or nVidia's CUDA drivers.

Running on ATI/AMD GPU while CPU folding. No slowdowns at all, even while gaming, unless the game needs a lot of VRAM.

On that note, maybe CUDA eats up a lot of VRAM while GPU folding.

Ahielia: I have no idea what would cause that, I haven't see that happen myself.

masta.g.86: I just checked my GTX 460, it seemed to only be using 43 MB of video memory while folding.

Out of the three cards that I have folding, only the Radeon 4650 in my work PC is somewhat sluggish while it's running, and it's somewhat intentional with that card. I have the FLUSH_INTERVAL environment variable set to 256 on it, even though it's a slow GPU. It maximizes throughput at the expense of usability. I used to only be able to run that at 64-96 with XP before it was unusable, whereas 256 on Win7 is just an annoyance. The CUDA/OpenCL cores don't need that kind of tweaking.

The 7.1.33 beta client came out two days ago. Along with the usual bug fixes there's some additional GPU whitelisting. Time for me to go fire up GPU folding alongside SMP on my Zacate HTPC. I'll squeeze every last drop out of that tiny chip .

I've also noticed it seems to be calculating projected PPD correctly/with bonuses now (41k PPD for bigadv SMP on my 980X, instead of 5k).

Download

Meh, I haven't folded in forever. I'm playing more games and need my GPU more these days plus despite the WUs being pretty small in the grand scheme of things they were placing a strain on my internet cap. So basically I'm out.

I'm not even on Squall's chart

I actually stopped folding due to concerns with extra Power consumption plus the wear and tear it would be doing to my GPU.
