Lindows

For all of you who don't know about this, like me 2 days ago, check out lindows.com Its a new OS being developed be the founder of Mp3.com (god he has got to have some money up is sleeves, wish I founded it) and it Runs both Linuz and Windows software, not a windows emulator based on linux, but modified code so the it actually runs the windows code like windows would, amazingly this is not a copyright infringement of anything. BUT MS is STILL trying to sue them based on the fact that they are "trying to confuse consumers" by having a name similar windows, and that doing to is a copyright infringement. Alone, this is like no case, and Lindows.com you just defend with a poll of consumers, buut instead they are actually attacking MS, by showing that many of thier competitors have used the Windows name or Logo on thier products, and many experts believe that MS trying to sue Lindows for a close copy of thier name, will actually result in MS losing rights to Windows as a copyrighted name, which I think is the best case scenario, but I doubt it will happen, to good to be true.

well....

first of all: HI RYOGA!!!!! haven't seen you in a while!

after all this crap:

well, that OS seems to be a good choice, because it would combine the best of both worlds.... as for the trademark, nah! I don't think that M$ will be able to win the race, it would be stupid..... and the name goes fine with the product......

All I'm interested in is if it can run Win32 games as good as Windows 9x. I couldn't much care for Linux, since Windows NT gives me all the security and stability I need.

Anyways, I second Demigod's opinion on this....

FYI, there was a (paid) beta release of it a while ago. And from what I read, this version was litte more than Linux + Wine.

Edit: The article I saw is here.

Lindows is nothing more than a stock distro with a pretty installer, renamed shortcuts, settings importation, and a custom WINE build.

It has nothing you couldn't run/install on any other Linux distribution. Heck, it's custom WINE can pop right into any other one just fine. And that's about all it's good for.

As for games, I don't know if Lindows will include WineX, but of course, you can just grab it yourself, or install a distro that has it.

Lindows is not for the reluctant-to-try-something-else Windows user at all. Those users should stick to Windows, or just try a normal distribution. Lindows offers nothing super-exclusive, and is relatively useless unless installed alongside Windows a la BeOS.

I have to disagree. I think its a good step. Atleast they are attempting to do something different. Best of both world is an exageration. Now if they continue to upgrade the software it might be something worth looking into in a few years when our lightning fast computers seem old and slow.

But they aren't doing anything new. They're just using a semi-moderately custom build of WINE. Nothing new, things like this have existed for quite some time. Read the URLs I've so graciously included before just going with the 'good for them' stance.

yup read this on Neowin - they talked this a while ago

it's nothing but a customized WINE - But far from the 'perfect' Windows.

Technically I've been able to run programs like adobe, and some others in wine.

Lindows is a very dangerous os. It runs in root, which is prone to hacking.

It gives linux a bad name... go figure. :eyes:

Is Linux not an alternative to windows?
It may be nothing special, but they're on the right track. Eventually, they'll probably come out with something that truly is special. (Maybe)

A subpar distro with potential security holes, that simply offers things most *nix users already have is not 'the right track'. Heck, Lindows is nothing unless you install it 'beside' Windows. And then, what really is the point? Easy Linux distributions already exist. If you have that much of an interest in the platform, try one. It's much better than hanging all over something that's just been blown out of porportion.

Y'know, one of my Comp Sci. profs told me about this "project". He said it had been in development for years now. He also said that there were no real updates in the past few monthes. Plus, they're charge a fee if you want to register to get updates. He also implied that it was probably just a scam; it's just more vapourware.
