Record sound with headphones?
Is there any way to record sounds from the computer's speakers when there are headphones plugged in? I can't help but think there's some obvious solution I'm overlooking... >_<

wait, so what are you trying to accomplish, are you trying to record the sound that is coming out of your speakers/headphones?' if so, a program such as audacity can do the trick. http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

You could always use a Y splitter to support two plugs. I have one for my MP3 player if my girlfriend wants to listen as well, they're cheap, ~$2-$4 for one...

I've tried Audacity; I can't find a way to record from anything other than a microphone. You see, I'm trying to record some stuff on CamStudio. Not only do I want to record my voice on the microphone, but I also want to record the sounds coming from the speakers while headphones are plugged in instead of recording the sounds from the headphones. CamStudio isn't capable of that so I was hoping for another way to record the speaker sounds. tl;dr version: I want to record from the speakers when headphones are plugged in (read: NOT from the headphones) as well as from a microphone. I feel like an idiot when it comes to this...

in audacity instead of recording from your microphone, select "wav out" or "audio out", or something similar. or sometimes your soundcard drivers can be gay like my soundcard, and not display a wavout channel

I believe mine is being gay, as well. In Audacity you have to change the recording device via Preferences, right? Well, here are my choices: Microsoft Sound Mapper - Input FrontMic - Realtek High Definition Audio >>my mic Microphone - Realtek High Definition Audio >>computer's mic, or something like that ...and none of them do I want it to do. I'm screwed.

Hmm. I have realtek HD audio on my lappy. Do you have an option for stereo mix in this menu like I do? It works for me.

I thought that my drivers were out of date so I went to Realtek's site and reinstalled the Vista drivers. It didn't help. ![]() Interestingly enough, I DID have Stereo Mix before I installed the new drivers; it never showed up in Audacity, though, even after I enabled it. Now, I don't even have the Stereo Mix available... Well, this is no good for me so I'm going to have to go back to an old restore point. I'll update this post when I've done so. EDIT: Okay. After a BSOD and many minutes waiting on Startup Repair and System Restore, I'm back to normal. Quote:
By the way, I'm working with two sets of headphones: This also has my microphone. ...and this is the set I listen to while the microphone captures the sounds from the first set. (It's the ear wraps.) Real top-of-the-line, huh? XD (sigh) Looks like I can't have my cake and eat it, too. ****.

make it so that you have the Stereo mix or w/e you were using in Audacity, and then double click on your "Volume" button in windows. (the volume button on your taskbar that you use to control system volume) when you double-click it, it will open up a dialog with alot of volume bars. you most-likely have "mic" muted, so un-mute it, and raise the bar high, and you'll be able to hear your voice through the system's speakers. (see attached picture) btw, if you can't see the "Mic" option in the Master Volume dialog box, goto Options->Properties and check "Mic". after you can hear your voice through the system's speakers, you can just record it in audacity with the Stereo Mix option or w/e its called on your PC...

Nope. My "Volume Mixer" only displays playback devices: ![]() ![]() I can't control any recording devices via that screen. I have to go to the Sound Control Panel to mess with them. This is really frustrating. I've been messing with many options in Audacity and CamStudio; I can only record from my DEFAULT recording device. If I set the Stereo Mix as the default, I can only record from the speakers. If I set my mic as the default, I can only record from the mic. Granted, this allows me to do more than I thought I could with CamStudio by being able to switch devices whenever I want, but I don't think I should HAVE to switch between them. ...unless there's another option?

I think the Realtek HD Vista drivers just suck. Is there any possible way to make a small partition for XP?

Ditto. ![]() If I could afford XP, I might have done that a long time ago.

The whole "Stereo Mix" or "What-U-Hear" or "Wav" option or whatever is the right solution really - so if you can get it to work I'd say do it that way. XP...well, if you can get hold of a copy you could whack it on a virtual machine to save you some trouble. I'd recommend VMWare Workstation, or Virtual PC 2007. Otherwise, have you got a "Line-In" input channel and a spare 3.5->3.5 stereo jack cable lyin' around? If so, you could send the cable straight from your speaker out to your line-in. Otherwise, maybe a portable recorder? Like a Creative ZEN with a line-in port? Somethin' like that. |

(sigh) I've been trying to search more for how to get the Stereo Mix to work. Here's the gist of what you have to do in Vista's Sound Control Panel: 1. Enable Stereo Mix and set it as your default recording device. (did that) 2. In your Speakers' Properties (Playback tab), adjust the volume of / unmute the Microphone in the Levels tab. Problem: there is no "Microphone" volume control when I go to my Speakers' Properties. There's "Realtek HD Audio" and "PC Beep"--that's it. Anyone have an idea what could be wrong with my Stereo Mix? P.S. I DID update my drivers; no change.
