Got a Battery Backed up Surge Protector (UPS)
Got an APS brand uninterupptable power supply (aka battery backup) for my comp. Its rated at 330watts and 550va. Plugged into the battery backup is my computer with a 650w psu e6600 oc@2.8 + 8800GTX & a power hungry s-ips panel 20" lcd screen (power hungry for an lcd at least (these normally models heat up to 45 degrees celcius near the top)) All im looking for is 7-8minutes time to save and shut down everything. Its rated at doing 43 minutes max and since my setup is more power hungry it will quite obviously power it for far shorter. Will this do it? I'm concerned that the battery isn't doesn't have enough wattage to power everything. I'm guessing that pc + monitor together pull somewhere in the neighborhood of 400-600w.

Take off the cord from the wall, and time it

As you've already noted, you'll get less time than the max rated, possibly substantially less. I can't imagine you'll get less than the 7-8 minutes you want. Other than that, you should have no problems. In addition to your PC and monitor, you may want to plug in your cable modem, if you have one. Just in case you're doing something important online. Also, I don't know if this helps, but I used to use a third-party AC adapter with my Gameboy. It supplied the right volts, but only about half the amps the GB "required". The GB suffered no ill effects, except the battery LED was always very dim, which usually means the batteries are nearly dead. |

Thanks guys. Yeah I think I'll have to just unplug it and give it a try tonight. I thought your bikes in the shop... how you gonna transport the wire cutters? Take the 18 then the 45 bus to get to my house.

I have an 600-VA 360WATTS UPS, it works great on my PC, the PSU is only 350W but the monitor takes up a massive 220W. Still powers fine for 15 min though, and this isn't even a branded one, its just one of those custom made ones that small manufacturers make. BTW, why do you need a UPS, I'm not guessing you have power cuts for 6 hours day like here!

then use what we call a stabilizer here. It costs only $20 and does miracles in PC protection, it can even handle a one second loss of power.
