Problems with FF9

Okay, when your party is in Treno and Eiko runs up and says the moogles are telling her something is wrong in Alexandria it cuts to Kuja walking around in Alexandria and then the screen goes black like your going to see your party again but then it freezes.

I'm using ePSXe 1.7

From an image

I'm using Pete's OpenGl Driver 1.77 for my video plugin.

Windowed mode
Texture quality: don't care
Texture filtering: 0

Off screen drawing: 2
Framebuffer textures: 1
" access: 3

Special game fixes checked
Direct framebuffer updates
Use old frame skipping
G4 polygon cache
fake subtractive blending
odd/even bit hack
use old texture filtering

The game has ran perfectly so far, so I don't know what the problem is...

post your system specs, and what format you made the image in.

what about your video card? i would suggest making a new image in .bin/.cue format and mounting it on a virtual drive but that one you are using should be fine.

update your drivers to 8.5 if you have not done so already, if you do that the OGL plugins should work fine but for now try the settings for the d3d plugin:

d3d config

disable the FPS limiter though, it isnt needed in 1.7.0. and in the game fixes menu i have the ff9 fix enabled.

try playing from the disc instead of an image, it might work doing that.

1- Try this and report me the result, make a savestate just before you get in the cutscene, then exit and run ePSXe v1.5.2 with the same setting, and see what happens.

* And also (for the black screen), try playing with the framebuffer effects.

2- Usually the freeze caused by a bad media or a bug (opcode errors), try other CD-R plugins.

Land me some results (screenshots if possible).(for both windows while running the emu)

The same thing happened to me, it show me black screen wen i dont have vivi, freya in party. But i found out that if you have Vivi, Freya in the party then go to the card tournament and after that, wen kuja appear in Alexandria, the game will work normally.

are your drivers catalyst 8.5 or higher? make sure they are otherwise any OGL plugins will not work correctly with your video card, you only other choices would be the d3d or software plugins if you do not update your drivers.

how are you saving your game, save states or memory card saves?

I'm willing to bet the chances of 5 different people having the same error for the same game with different configurations is unlikely. Freezing in this manner usually means a scratched up cd. The cd image is most likely corrupt. The person that uploaded it probably had a scratched up disc. Piracy, we wont help you there.

I am also having problems with FF9 giving me black screens and freezing. Right now it last happened in Cleyra with the Sir Fratley cutscene. Right after the scene was done, it froze. You can't really predict it. I'll just be playing and suddenly, I'll get a black screen. Particularly, if I hit the ESCAPE button, and then I resume playing, I'll get a black screen freeze very frequently. I am using the FF9 CD-ROMs to play the game -- I am not using ISO images. I am using ePSXe 1.70 on Windows XP 64-bit. I am using Pete's OpenGL2 Driver 2.9 for my video plugin:

Full screen, 1680x1050, 32-bit color depth, Internal X resolution: 2, Internal Y resolution: 2, Stretching mode: 0, Render mode: 2, Texture filtering: 6, GFX card vram: 0 (autodetect), Hi-Res textures: 1, Use pixel shader for 'PSX texture window' emulation, Show FPS display on startup, Use FPS limit, Auto-detect FPS/Frame skipping limit, NO use frame skipping, Screen filtering, 0 pixels flicker-fix border, shader effects: 1. Fullscreen smoothing, Shader level 4, MDEC filter, no other checkboxes or crap

Sound plugin is Eternal SPU Plugin 1.41, Direct Sound, Buffer Size: 64, Wait for XA buffer is free, Fine Tune 0, Neill's Reverb, Audio out method: Thread, Update before accessing register

ePSXe CDR WNT/W2K core 1.7.0, Cdrom letter --D:--, I tried it with and without subchannel read and had the same problem

Very annoying... I can't play FF9 anymore because I keep losing my progress due to sporadic black screen freezes. Let me know if I haven't provided enough information to solve the problem.

what video card do you have on your system? have you tried making images of your discs in a format like .bin/.cue? is ff9 the only game that has this behavior and have you tried other video plugins?
