Issue with PCSX2 0.9.4

Hey peoples. I'm trying to get PCSX 0.9.4 running on my system but I'm running into some problems. First I tried the VM version of the emulator which didn't work because it failed to allocate the vm correctly (but I'm running Vista Home Premium so it's to be expected ).

I tried the TLB version next and I managed to get it to boot to the BIOS once but it hasn't done so since. Every time I try to run anything now, be it the bios or direct from the CD/DVD, I get pcsx2t.exe has encountered an error and needs to close. This, as I mentioned, happens no matter which boot method I try or which games I attempt to use (even ones showing as compatible in the list cause it to fail).

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling, disabling the NLOOP hack in the gfx settings, running under compatability mode and get the same result every time.

If it helps my system setup is the following

Intel Core 2 Duo 6400 @ 2.13GHz
3 gigs generic RAM
X-Fi platinum soundcard
ATI X1300 256mb Gfx card running catalyst 8.5 drivers

Any suggestions? If you need more info ask and I shall provide.

About the "failed to allocate memory" error: Do you have some anti-virus/firewall programs running? Some of them tend to use the memory range pcsx2 wants.

You're using zerogs as the graphics plugin aren't you? If not, gsdx crashes when you use the wrong dx settings.

I only get the memory error on the VM version. With regards to the graphics plugin I'm using GSdx 0.1.7 configured to use the DX9 hardware mode, Pixel Shader 3 and SSE3.

Also slight update, I can get the emulator to run ISOs using the Linuzappz ISO CDVD 0.6.0 plugin but I'd prefer not to be filling up my HDD with PS2 ISOs when I have the discs to hand.

Well, yeah the vm version tries to take a specific memory range which is often used by firewall programs. The tlb does not use that range.
So the problem was peops dvd plugin? I do have vista and I cannot get it to work. That's why I'm using linuzappz iso plugin for my isos and efp polling driver 0.4.0 for the dvds.
I uploaded it some days ago, I hope it works for you.

Ah cheers, I'll give that a shot and yes I am running firewall/av software too. Never mind though because I just got Odin Sphere running on the tlb version and I couldn't tell the difference between the speed I get on my PS2 compared to the emu version (apart from loadtimes of course ).

Yeah, you can check the speed though if you're using gsdx in window mode. It's given in fps and %. You could also set a higher framelimit if you want to run the game faster than on your ps2 (if your pc is strong enough of course).

Heh not the kinda game I want a higher framerate on :P

New problem now, the music in the background (depending on which plugin I use) either a: slows down to around 50% of its normal speed from time to time and breaks up quite a lot b: plays 5x faster than it should. Is that just a limitation of my PC or have I fiddled with something I shouldn't have in the sound settings?

Well, if the speed which is shown by gsdx is always 100% the sound should be okay. I use zerospu2 0.4.6 with time scaling enabled. I don't know about possibe problems with odin sphere though, since I don't have the game.

I guess you're using a frame limiter (f4 mode)...

It doesn't seem to be limited to Odin Sphere it would seem, getting the same issue in FFX. I'm not using a frame rate limiter on either game, it seems that some sections of both games go extremely quickly while others slow down and stutter. Probably my hunk of junk needing an upgrade :P

You can use the frame limiter to get rid of the parts which are too quick.
And to eliminate the slow parts, you could try the beta off PCSX2.net - News and enable some speed hacks. They could break the game though.

OK now I am officially perplexed. Every single sound plugin I use has the same effect and I can't use any other plugin for graphics that the ZeroGS ones because of the geometry issue with FFX.

I'm not sure if the sound is dragging the graphics performance down or vice versa. Why can't things ever be easy =/

What about gsdx with the "nloop hack" enabled? That should fix the ffx errors.
The box for the hack can be black or gray, one of them do work.
Another question, do you have 100% speed with your game? Check the window border for the fps. The sound will stutter if your cpu or video card is too weak/slow.

Yeah it's looking like its the video card that's holding me back. 119% FPS on simple scenes but when you start adding multiple character models into the scene, the FPS plummets. Time to fork out for the 8800GTS methinks

Yeah, you can test whether it's your video card or not. Check your task manager (it's not at 100% if you card is limiting you). Or check the % cpu usage which is shown in the gsdx window (if at 99%=vid card is limiting you).

ffx should get you full speed with your cpu and gsdx, even with zerogs I guess.
But that ati X1300 sucks hard

Did you get rid of the ffx geometry errors?

Well, i can help you out slightly. Skimming through i didnt see it geet answered, so here it goes, all you have to do to allocate the memory for pcsx2 is to turn off the user account control, and it should work fine, you can turn it back on afterwords of course.

Yes I did, thanks for the tip

And yes the card blows, it's the only thing that stops me playing things like Hellgate London on anything more than low to medium settings.

About the UAC thing, I have it disabled due to the fact it annoys the crap out of me. If I wanted to be given the option of whether to run something I just installed, updated and double clicked the shortcut to or not I wouldn't have done all the above in the first place :P.

Thanks for the help guys, looks like it's upgrade time.
