Muting the sound problems.

I searched for topics but they didn't seem to apply to my problem.

I know how to disable the sound in ePSXe, but when I do Final Fantasy VII freezes. This happens when characters talk, when I enter battle and attempt to enter towns. It's only a problem because I enjoy listening to other music while I play; kinda tired of the sound now. I guess I could straight up listen to me iPod, but I'd rather find out what's wrong. Tested with ePSXE SPU core as well as Eternal SPU 1.41 and the same thing happens.
Any solutions?
