Too many spambots.

I'm sure everyone has noticed lately that a whole lot of spam bot have been getting trough, and there is a serious need to find a fix, because they are no longer just posting new threads, they are posing in other people's threads, which is much worse IMO.

ive seen like 3 or 4 now this week, each one being equally annoying. cant we make it so that you have to enter like some random set of numbers or letters during the registration process (if we dont do so already of course) as a way to test if its a person or a bot? ive seen many other sites that do this and i dont really know how a bot could get around something like that, especially if its randomized.

Enforce a time period of 60 minutes of tim e spent online before new members can post either new thread or new replies = 100% fixed
Even advanced bots dont stay online at the site this much time.

If letters have to be input by new members before they can publish clickable links, handy as well ('post identified as spam')

Anything else would be expected to be troublesome. Dont look anywhere else for a fix. Also, registration captchas do not do much anyway.

If you see any -> report, and get on with your life. The current mods can handle all this just fine. If the looks of it is too intoleable for you, just report again, and get on with your life.

I've already raised the issue in the administrator discussion forum,so I hope we'll find a solution to counter this fast

Tyrants and likely-to-turn-tyrants would not be the wisest path. See post 4.

60 minutes before posting allowed = best course of action, and the ngemu memberbase would not have to fear the rise of tyrants.

enabling the captcha image would cut spambots by about 25%

25% not enough of an improvement. 75% or higher would be more optimal

oops. should've been 25%+

Changing the activation rules would work as well

create a new members board where unactivated members must post (a compulsory bot check) and admins / super mods would activate the new members, this board would then be hidden from them since they are no longer in the unactivated group

Very bothersome for new users (appropriate on very big, *very* active boards, and only if automated - like the way its done at GaiaOnline). However, too unoptimal here. Requiring mods to approve memberships or posts for new members would not fly high at all.

Bots are useless if their links arent made clickable. Forcing unparsing of links for members registered under 24 hours and under 10 posts could alleviate this concern, and keep the readerbase safe from such bad links, till proper administrative measure has been taken against the offender bot.
