Weird problem with AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 4400+
I have a problem with my AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 4400+. Its supposed to be clocked at 2.2-2.3Ghz by default but when I turn my computer on for the first time and I looked at the system properties. It says "AMD Athlon(tm) 64x2 Dual Core Processor 4400+ 1.00 Ghz" So I thought it was just the computer reading error, until I tried running a game which is MOH:Airborne. I installed it and it gave me a warning that my specs are not enough for it when all my specs are well above the minimum specs. It seems like its the processor. The processor model is supported but the speed of mine which is clocked at is too low. I thought this was a mistake too so I just carried on and ignored the warning. The game was at 15FPS at 640x480 at all low/off. This is horrendous. My graphic card is 8600GT and my RAM is 2GB. I have no idea why is this happening. So I went to the BIOS to check the speed of the CPU. It says there that it is running at 2.3Ghz. I tried overclocking the FBS Frequency and CPU ratio because the FBS Frequency was at the lowest and the CPU ratio was at auto. However, everytime I tried overclocking. The computer would just give me a error when I boot up that there is a problem with overclocking the processor. So I tried using MSI'S Dual Core Center Application to monitor my CPU speed. I noticed that it stays at 1000Mhz most of the time and goes up to 2300Mhz when idle sometimes. However, if I start a program or game, it reverts back to 1000Mhz. Can someone help me? Is this a problem with the processor? Its a new computer. |

sounds like Cool & Quiet is enabled, which lowers the cpu ratio when its not required. run prime95 or orthos and check cpuz, it should show the correct speed then.

Cool&Quiet is disabled. The core speed doesn't lower when it is not required. It lowers when it is required!

thats really odd.. make sure C&Q is disabled in both the bios and within windows. if you still get a problem, i would try reformating and reinstalling windows.

well its different depending on what motherboard you have. Asus motherboads have a program called Asus Cool and Quiet, and it can be enabled within windows. thats most-likely the problem..

sorry i'm not sure what software MSI boards come with, but most-likely some software is running Cool and Quite technology. if you can't find it, reinstalling windows would delete all the programs and then not have the cool&quite program.

Can you try to download CPU-Z and give us a screenshot of it's findings?

If it isn't Cool N Quiet causing it (i.e. it is set to off in the BIOS), then perhaps his heatsink is seated improperly and/or his CPU is overheating, and hence downclocking itself.

Yes, the OnDie temperature diode has a hardcoded peak temp, when it reaches this it downclocks to protect the cpu, and if it continues further still it will automatically shut off. |

Well, according to that, CPU-Z says it's working correctly. But Windows says otherwise.... Have you tried updating the BIOS of your mobo?
