Have you ever Imported a game from another country?

Technically, I've done it 4 times.

The first was Shenmue 2 which a local Electronics Boutique got traded in, it was a European version.

Second was a Columns cartridge for the Sega Game Gear, why I imported it from England is beyond me, but yeah, I imported it.

Third is a Pengo type game for the Game Gear, it has text in Japanese on it, a salesperson from an Electronics Boutique gave me 4 Game Gear games and it was one of them.

Forth is the one I just got in the mail today, a Raiden DX Playstation game from Japan. It wasn't as hard to get running in EpsxE and PSX as I envisioned. It came in a jewel case with instructions, as if I read Japanese! Some of the game is in English and it's a shooter, so I can play it. I ripped the .iso and have played it a bit today. It's fun.

I think a couple of my Neo Geo MVS boards are Japanese, but were shipped to the states. I picked up most of them via Ebay from a California shipper...

So what games have you imported? Were they worth the price?

Final Fantasy III on the DS. It was cheaper to import from the US (what with the weak US Dollar and strong Pound) and got it months before the UK release. It's also handy that the DS is completely region free.

All my PS3 games are imported from Canada, well... apart from Motorstorm that came with the console.

Virtua Fighter 5, Unreal Tournament 3, Uncharted, Ratchet and Clank Future, LAIR, Fight Night Round 3, Folklore, Heavenly Sword and Untold Legends.

I import them cause they're cheaper and I can get them before they're released in Europe.

Never have, but I've considered importing Front Mission 5. Changed my mind when I remembered I don't know Japanese.

Daoc.

I know it doesn't make senses, but I wanted to play it with a guild I played with for a long time in other games (like D2). And since like 95% of them were in the same country, which wasn't mine, I just imported the game to get a key that would work on the same servers.

Techinally, everyone imports everything from China, cuz that's where they're made!

...They just import the items before we actually buy them!

I tend to import a lot, as well, especially for financial reasons (I love that cheap Dollar ) and for availability reasons. Furthermore games usually get lousy German subtitles or even crappier German voice acting (except for God of War and Primal which kicked ass). Games I imported:

- Vagrant Story
- Final Fantasy Tactics
- Tales of Destiny
- Tales of Eternia
- Star Ocean 2
- Xenogears
- Legend of Dragoon (that German translation was horrifying)
- Valkyrie Profile 1 and 2
- Final Fantasy XII
- Xenosaga 1-3 (only ep. 2 is out in Germany)
- MGS3:Subsistence
- Shadow Hearts: From the New World (horrible game)
- Radiata Stories

I happened to visit the U.S. a few times, so there was always some good looting ^^

Quite a bit, I have mainly Japanese game imports on my list as I know they wont be coming into North America (This includes Premium Box sets of these games). Still studying Japanese at the side as I know it is difficult to get some of those terms.

Never needed to. It's different, when talking about music.

Yeah, voice-acting can be painful. Sometimes even in English. In those cases it would be great to get Japanese versions.

The problem with germany ...is that they use dubbing teams....in other words James Bond, The kid's father in Free Willy, Austin Powers and Oblivion's Emperor aswell as quite possibly Goku and a bunch of anime characters all have the exact same voice....makes it real fun to identify a character by their voice.

This is just an example by the way...it may not apply to the specific series I mentioned here....but it is most definitely true. I recently imported all 4 Knight Rider seasons from Germany and most voices are the exact same as those from Free Willy which I got like 10 years ago...aswell as Lion King of like 12 years ago, aswell as White Fang aswelll as......you get the picture.

Well, I think a lot of countries do that. Hell, in the Simpsons over there there's a guy who do like 5-6 characters alone (minimum).
He do use a different voice for each (I wasn't even aware he did all of them since they all sound so different) but still . (hell, he must have a awesome paycheck)

But I can still recognize sometime the dubbers, it may not be as bad as in Germany but sometime you'll have two popular actors who get dubbed by the same person, which can be strange.

I don't see that much as a problem. There are some voice actors that always dub the same person which at least keeps some continuity if you watch a couple of films with the same actor. However, it seems like video games have their own set of voice actors, because I never heard the voice of Liquid Snake anywhere else except for Crash Bandicoot where he did Dr. Neo Cortex. Both performances were pretty crappy (check out Li...errr...Master Miller's performance - and try to imagine him shouting "SNAAAAAAAKE!").

EDIT: Yes, I know that Bruce Willis and Dolph Lundgren and Steven Seagal and probably a bunch of other B-Movie actors have the same dubber.

It just makes it hard to identify people...which is annoying....you have a bunch of really different people all using the same voice....

You can't tell me that you don't associate a certain voice with a certain character when watching something in it's original language, now imagine watching 2 movies after each other...and having the exact same voices...it just feels strange and crappy...

It makes it hard for characters to really be different if they all use the same voice.

Edit: Oh boy...that guy's voice is truly awfull...he can't even pronounce half his words and sometimes sounds a bit foreign...probably a dialect creeping in. Those voices also all sound familiar though, the 2 chicks I mean (I only listened to up to 2 minutes of it)...the others seem new. Probably voiced a mouse or something in a Disney movie my sister watched or I did back in the day.

As I said, this only counts for either B-Movie actors (who gives a crap about those, anyway). Most high-profile actors have their own voice actor.

Okay. By the way: I didn't know that there was an anime version of Trigun... Is it good? Cuz I found the comic pretty neat.

Yeah it's not bad, a little old though so it's got it's quirks (which I can easily live with but not everyone might) but I like it and it has one of my favourite anime endings, it follows the manga a bit at first but then deviates onto a whole new track.
