Super Robot Wars Alpha Gaiden - No Voice

It's just like the title says!

I have SRW Alpha Gaiden. I can run it with almost no problems in pSX 1.13). It runs fine. No slowdown, music's OK, sound effects are in synch, except for one thing:

There are no voices. Anywhere. The game is perfectly playable but I'd like to get my daily dose of super robot yelling in; does anyone know how to make it work? The compatibility list says that there should be 'Minor sound glitches: spoken dialogue sometimes preceded by half-second bits of other dialogue' but I'm not getting any spoken dialogue whatsoever.

It's a Japanese game (it wasn't released anywhere else) and I have an ISO of it.

That's probably your problem, Wildcard77 - .iso is not the best format for Playstation games. Try ripping your game to a better format: .bin/.cue will probably do, if the game has no protection, but the bets formats are .ccd/.img/.sub or .mdf/.mds.

I had a copy in mdf/mds originally; I had it re-ripped in .iso by the suggestions of the ePSXe forum (I can't even get it to boot in ePSXe, as it turns out).

Exactly the same thing happens under mdf/mds. No change whatsoever.

i think that game is multi track. since .iso format does not have multi track support that would explain your problem if that is the case here with this game. .iso format also does not have certain audio type support so that is another thing to consider. i really suggest either playing directly from the disk or doing an image in .bin/.cue.

bin/cue is better for multi-track than mdf/mds? I'll try it soon and get back to you.

No, .mdf/.mds and .ccd/.img/.sub are better than .bin/.cue for multi-track, but .bin/.cue is usually Ok if there are no subcode issues, and is certainly better than .iso.

However, converting from one image format to another doesn't usually work, because the advantages of the various formats are due to the extra information about the image they include. So, once you've converted to an image that doesn't include that information, it's gone - you can't get it back by converting to a format that would have included that information if it had been ripped directly.

As jonc2006 suggests, try playing directly from the original CD or, if you want to play from images, rip directly from the CD.

yeah i forgot about that whole subcode thing. ive never run into any trouble concerning that myself so it didnt cross my mind until now. and like patrickp said, dont use your current image and then convert its format. you will need to create an entirely new image from the disk and this time do it in one of the formats we suggested.

but make sure that for whatever image creating software you use, you set it up right and configure it (if necessary) so it will know to include the specific types of data that is needed from that type of disc (psx) in the image because some programs dont include the vitals, specifics and important stuff until you actually tell them to do it manually. just follow one of the guides word-for-word listed in the almighty psx image creation tutorial(s) thread.

CloneCD and AFAIK Alcohol both have profiles you can use to optimise the rippping for the task. If you're using CloneCD, check out the CloneCD forums - you can find a number of custom profiles for download that include specific Playstation ones.
