Is it possible to burn a cd-r and play it on an unmodded PS2?

Maybe if, after burning, you dont close the final session and then write something else in too?
I only have a bin & cue, as after my GT2 disk got scratched I backed up everything else. Lucky, 'cos now FFVII Disk 1 is dying and my Radikal Bikers (Ok, I know it's not great but it has huge nostalgia value) is dead (stupid siblings :P)

With an Action Replay 2 device, it should d be possible... costs around 20~25 bucks, and allows to use cheats too, generally.
If session's not closed, it will not be compatible anyway (some settings required for compatibility)

he needs an action replay 1, GT2 is a psone game

there's a disk like the swapmagic too,
but I personally used an action replay 1 bonus disc
that comes with the AR2 v2

That won't work. You would have to modify a lead-in part of the disc which can only be done on pressed discs.
