Casper (PSX) game/ePSXe timeout error?

I don't think I've seen the same problem posted about here before, so looks like this calls for a new thread.

Playing Casper for the PS1, I encounter a problem fairly early on in the game. Whenever I try to go upstairs from the main foyer (first area you begin in in the game), the loading screen starts up, and either doesn't get to loading at all or will load almost completely before freezing, and moments later the screen will go black with the words "SPU timeout, status: 7" in the upper left-hand corner of the screen. Mixing a variety of options in my plug-in menus hasn't helped, and I've tried this with two different emulators and two different ISOs of the game. I haven't seen anything in the ePSXe help FAQ about timeout stuff, so that couldn't help me.

Anyone have any idea as to what the problem might be? Nothing seems to work.

try setting epsxe up using these plugins:

video: peops soft driver v117
audio: eternal spu 1.41
cdrom: epsxe or sapu cdrom

have you tried playing the game from the cd instead of an image?

I did, but then I looked into my room and got too lazy to get up and search for the disk. I figured, "I'd find the disk when I clean the Area 51 I call a room."

Laziness abound, but the thing is probably in the last place I'd look, and I don't think hardly anyone would want to do a few hours' worth of searching to find one single game.

As far as the Emulator goes, I had the video plug-in, but not the CD-rom plug-in. I believe I've figured out the problem, though. For most of the sound plug-ins I've tried as of since you posted (including the one you suggested), if I turn on the "Enable SPU IRQ hack" option, the sound will become all distorted in the game-play area, but I am able to go up the stairs. However, this messes with game speed and sounds horrendous (on one of them, it even crashed the computer, so I'm never using that one again < <;;; ). If I don't enable it, usually the sound will go fine, but I can't get upstairs without that message showing.

This is a very bad paradox =S

hmmm. ive done a little searching for other people with similar issues and this is probably the most relevant thing i have found that might be a solid answer:

Casper Bin/Cue First zone loads with standard settings but Errors SPU Timeout, status: 7 when you zone into other roomsalright

since i do not have this game myself i can only speculate here and any settings i post i cant really test myself. the most important thing i noticed when i was browsing through some stuff was that this may be something that just cannot be worked around, as where i read that from listed the game as "non-working". if you still want to attempt to get it working, you can try my setup then. do note that you do not need to worry about the cdrom plugin if you are only playing from an image. btw do you know what format your image is in? is the extension like .bin or .img?

this is my video setup:

Plugin: Pete's DX6 D3D Driver 1.1.76
Author: Pete Bernert
GFX card: NVIDIA GeForce Go 7900 GS

Resolution/Color:
- 1920x1200 Fullscreen - [32 Bit] (ignore)

Textures:
- R8G8A8A8
- Filtering: 6 (0 and 4 are other good too)
- Hi-Res textures: 0
- VRam size: 256 MBytes

Framerate:
- FPS limit: on
- Frame skipping: off
- FPS limit: 60.0

Compatibility:
- Offscreen drawing: 3
- Framebuffer texture: 2
- Framebuffer access: 4
- Alpha multipass: on
- Mask bit: on
- Advanced blending: hardware

Misc:
- Scanlines: off [0]
- Unfiltered FB: off
- Dithering: off
- Screen smoothing: on (keep this off unless you are sure your card can handle it
- Full vram: on
- Game fixes: on [00000001] (ignore unless there is a specifc fix for whatever game you try)

-----------------------------------------------
and this is my sound setup (eternal spu 1.41)

i have the top 3 boxes ticked

in the actual config mine is set up like this:

audio device- directsound
buffer size- 80 (doesnt have to be this, so set it to your preferance)
audio-out method- thread

all 3 special game fixes enabled

"wait for XA buffer is free" enabled under the "misc" section

neill's reverb

--------------------------------------------------------
and just to cover everything here: my cdrom plugin is ePSXe CDR WNT/W2K core 1.5.2.
