Saga Frontier 1 problems

This is an interesting problem I have. This game worked in the past, but I'm unable to get it to work. I start the game up, and it plays its intro video (unable to skip). Then, I should be able to press circle, or start, to enter character selection. However, nothing happens. The music just goes on like normal, and my button presses do nothing. I checked the controller and it works perfectly. I checked the CD I own for any bad scratches and there wasn't anything noticeable. I just cannot comprehend why I cannot start the game. It seems a really odd problem. I would really appreciate any help.

try making an image of your disc.
