Is ivy bridge worth it.

Im upgrading my processor soon and I am stuck between the i5 2500k or the i5 3570k.

There is like a $30 difference between the two and I'm just wondering if the ivy bridge is worth it? Which one will overclock the best? And preform the best, especially in emulators.

The sandy bridge would overclock more stable as they have lower temps.
The ivy should certainly hit 4.5ghz though and is has about 5-10% faster ipc than sandy.

Ivy has better integrated graphics and usb3+pcie3, If you're going to use the integrated graphics then ivy all the way but if not then sandy is better value and incredibly fast

The tldr is to get the sandy bridge, it's plenty fast for emulators.

what about power consumption? Would 500w be enough with my gpu.

First step is to say what you have so one can establish whether you will experience a sufficient jump.

Well I pretty sure either processor will be giving me a huge jump coming from an anthlon 64 x2 and 2gb of ram. My gpu is also a HD 5770

Ah then yeah there will be a monumental jump.
Well I say get whichever is cheaper (factoring in the motherboard as well, locally Sandybridge mobos have become pretty rare (at least the good/performance ones) so Ivy would probably be the better choice here)

Yeah I was wondering about that, what is the difference between z68 and z77?

Basically just the support for Ivybridge in the new chipset (Z77) as far as I know.

X2 to sandy bridge?
me going from an overclocked X2 5200+ ~3.2Ghz is heavily shamed by a mere 3.1Ghz i3 2100 dual core HT lol, so going to i5 2500K/3570K is beyond monumental imo.

Both the Z68 and Z77 support Sandy Bridge and Ivy bridge CPUs (Z68 just requires a UEFI update)
Main difference being the Z77 has an internal USB 3.0 and PCI-E 3.0 support and more output monitor it seems

well i had the same question

i bought
giga z77x ud3g
3570k
8gb corsair vengeance
hyper212+

i have mine at 4.5ghz @ 1.26 vcore, very happy, max temp in torture test are 70-75, normally around 60 or less in games, so i am very happy, i know i could clock mine even more but 4.5 is very nice and dumb easy

30 bucks is not much difference.

Go Ivy, Yes Sandy will clock higher, But with the IPC gain over Sandy, you'll boil about the same, Example. My 4.5ghz is basically a 4.7/4.8ghz Sandy, And i haven't tried overclocking real hard just because my cooler needs to be reseated, Getting Air cooling temps under water.

The z77 Chipset will also let you OC your RAM without messing with the BLK, Thats assuming you're also getting a new board with your CPU.

If going new now, get Ivy Bridge if it's at about the same price, but get Sandy Bridge if you find it discounted. As said above, they can sort of balance out, so that's how I'd do it (by letting price decide).

Ivy Bridge is a little faster than Sandy Bridge clock for clock, but sometimes Sandy Bridge runs cooler allowing it to overclock further, compensating somewhat. I'd prefer the Core i7 3770K myself, because it's Ivy Bridge and can be paired with cheaper motherboards. The Core i7 3820 is more of a Core i7 2x00K with a few differences, none of which (maybe aside from quad channel RAM?) really mean anything performance-wise.

Oh well...at least it will run stable...unlike the system I had before...plus the cooler they gave me at the store, the D-14, is a real monster...never thought I'd get to see my CPU reach 42C under 90% load...it's like liquid nitrogen or something!
