Looking for a new Monitor

Ok, my trusty 28" seems to be getting scurvy or perhaps the flu. So I need a new monitor to replace it with.

My budget is around $800 and it has to be 27" or over. I can go a bit higher price wise if the qualities there.

Anyone know of any good monitors (Besides the usual Dell/HP with the hyper aggressive AntiGlare coating) ? Even overseas models, I will consider them as well.

What will it be used for? How far away will you sit?

Over ~$500 is probably hitting diminishing returns unless you have real professional need for it (or go for a 2560 x 1440/1600 panel).

At 27", I don't think you want 1080p unless you're sitting further away (or don't mind the lower DPI/"image quality"). Anything higher will likely be something other than TN panels (since I don't think anything at 2560 x 1440/1600 is a TN panel), which you probably want to be the case anyway if you're looking for quality, but will have some form of AG coating. Almost all IPS panels have it.

There are some Korean panels which are rumored to use "lesser" panels similar to the Dell UltraSharp U2711 (2560 x 1440) which are IPS without AG coating and lesser stands, inputs, and OSDs, and they are cheap too; well under your budget. Check Overclock.net; they have a few popular recent threads about them last I checked. I can't recall the brand/model name offhand, but you'll find them easily.

That's about your only option(s). Otherwise, the usual UltraSharp U2711 and higher and it's brand competitors are your options.

Well I may be looking at panels other than LG ones, so IPS is not my only consideration.

It's being used for Multimedia, and it's on a movable mount. Res can be 1440 or 1600. NEC or LaCie look good, but are a bit expensive.

I don't think there are many, if any, 2560 x 1440/1600 TN panels, so besides IPS, all you have is VA, and I'd rather have IPS even with AG coating. Most are probably IPS though.

Just make sure it has an RGB mode you can use because the wide gamut mode isn't really necessarily the best for end user viewing. For multimedia, I'd stick to RGB.

I think NEC and LaCie are the sort of stuff that's usually kind of redundant unless you have a real need for them in my opinion (and that's more professional work than multimedia/entertainment), but that's your call.

Over on the somethingawful Monitor thread they talk a bit about the Korean monitors and their pros and cons.

http://stores.ebay.com/Dream-seller/...=p4634.c0.m322

You can get an ACHIEVA Shimian 27" for $300 if you are so inclined. There is some fear about glass models or something, but one user mentions there isn't this gloss coating or something, and apart from 1 dead pixel he searched high and low for the panel was superb, although it appears to be luck of the draw really.

Still a gamble, but for its price it's to be expected. Part of the fun I guess.

..............

Hmmm, looks as if the Catleap model has some good results. I might have to get one for work.

ASUS' latest and greatest screens look absolutely awesome. If I had the moolah I wouldn't look anywhere else.

So that's what that is. I've heard about it on a podcast I listen to, but never bothered to look it up. Interesting...

samsung is mainstream so they no longer count and besides a yamakasi is 3/4 the price with better specs, but usually not the same quality

Asus, Ace, Samsung, and LG all have decent quality.

but I hate Samsung for it's business strategy.

Two major corporations I dislike: Samsung and Apple.

$325 from Red-Cap. I chose the SE model which doesn't have the speakers or glass.

Supposed to be LG Panels with possible dead pixels in a cheap case. Well worth that price considering it has the same specs as a Apple 27".
