Some advice: Getting started with emulator programming

Hi all,
I know this is probably a question that many won't take seriously (I'm sure lots of people have dreams of emulator programming but nothing ever comes of it), but I'm hoping that at least a few people will offer their suggestions for reading material.

With the nullDC project being (as far as I can see) effectively dead, I'm looking into trying to improve the code myself (as a hobby). Obviously, I know I should first improve my C++ (I'm a competent programmer in other languages, I just need to brush up on C++ in particular) but as for how to go about creating/modifying a dreamcast emulator, I've got no idea where to even get started.

I appreciate that google is the fountain of all knowledge, but I was hoping that people might be able to pass on any particular links that they might have found informative. (I'm not expecting to be spoon fed information, just a reading list would suffice).

A bit of background: I'm a recent graduate of theoretical physics, with a degree which involved a significant amount of computational experiments, so I'm *fairly* confident that programming and mathematics won't be a problem, it's just the dreamcast/emulator specific knowledge that I'd lack.

Any help would be appreciated,
Thanks.

You might want to check out research from Makaron and LXdream as well. A background into Windows CE can help too.
