My epsxe is running slow
I switched to windows 7 recently with a brand new computer that blows my old one out of the water... now my ps1 emu runs slow as time and the graphics are sometimes a bit wonky... my specs are I5 quad-core 3.3mhz nvidia 9800gt 1 gig 8 gigs ram I even had to revert to pete's opengl 1.78 cause the opengl 2 didn't work anymore my old pc was as follows pentium 4 2.7 a gig ram nvidia 6600 256mb On this system I had everything running not only smoothly but with turbo as well... If I have to change the emu to notice only a single core how do I do so? lol I hope I covered all the areas I needed to for an easy answer (if one exists:P) |

What games are you playing? What plugins are you using? Have you installed drivers?

I have tried a few games in my arsenal like legend of legaia and breath of fire 3 and dragon quest 7 I can't even get the right setting anymore for dragon quest to look like it did on PS1. like I stated before though my old pc with like 20% of the capabilities as this one would run these games WITH turbo lol. Now it won't even go normal speed... I have all the drivers updated and installed I am usually pretty good when it comes to these things, I created an account here after several days of trying to get my configs right pete's opengl 1.78 P.e.o.p.s Dsound audio driver 1.9 epsxe core CDR WNT?W2K core1.7.0 |

Hello I could use some help too, I wanted to play FFIX again so I look for an emulator to play it on my laptop instead of my PS2. I’ve read other peoples post and made some progress. But it ePSXe still seems to run slow. I think it’s the FPS it runs around 40-59. Sometimes it gets stuck really slowly around 30. Also has some problems changing scenes battle or changing zones will freeze for 5-20 sec. Every now and again when I hit esc and temporally close outs and try to continue it goes to a black screen where I can still move and hear sound but can’t see anything. You said that OGL2 plugin doesn't work so that kinda raises suspicion. Are there any error messages (when you run the emulator) related to OGL2 plugin? @kur0: You have a low end integrated graphic card and a miss configured plugin. Check this thread for the proper config (and enter the real amount of VRAM).

I'm running thinkpad t420: core i5 2430M 2.4GHz 4096 MB RAM Intel HD graphic 3000 - 1696MB When running chrono cross I got this kind of fps in first battle Uploaded with ImageShack.usI'm using: Plugin: Pete's DX6 D3D Driver 1.1.77 Author: Pete Bernert GFX card: Intel(R) HD Graphics Family Resolution/Color: - 640x480 Fullscreen - [16 Bit] Textures: - R4G4B4A4 - Filtering: 0 - Hi-Res textures: 0 - VRam size: 0 MBytes Framerate: - FPS limit: on - Frame skipping: off - FPS limit: Auto Compatibility: - Offscreen drawing: 1 - Framebuffer texture: 1 - Framebuffer access: 0 - Alpha multipass: on - Mask bit: off - Advanced blending: none Misc: - Scanlines: off [0] - Unfiltered FB: on - Dithering: off - Screen smoothing: off - Full vram: off - Game fixes: on [00000001] I find this pretty ridiculous because my old dual core computer with 1gb ram runs epsxe just fine ![]() Is it because of the i5 processor? Is there anyway to cure this? |

I don't think that's the case, try using D3D plugin instead of DX6 D3D secondly in - VRam size: 0 MBytes write an actual number of VRAM your graphic card has. If this doesn't then i guess intel HD graphic cards are just that sucky, your only hope is to switch to PEOP soft plugin. |

I think the processor is really the problem. I read somewhere that epsxe works only in 1 core so my 4 cores are as good as one. And since somehow windows 7 or whatever doesn't recognize epsxe as a demanding applications, it refuses to increase the core's multiplier. Originally, I used cpu-z to check my com, it shows a multiplier of 8. I check my chip's spec (2430m) and found that it has a clock multiplier of 24!! (http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/Core_i...0i5-2430M.html) So I tried to somehow increase this number by using throttlestop. I moved the multiplier to 13 and, to my surprise, the frame rate which was before 35-45 jumped to the good old 60. Under cpu-z, the core speed also jumped from around 780MHz to 1295.9MHz. So apparently I solved the problem. It's just that, by increasing multiplier to 13, will I somehow damage my laptop? Please answer

Again, that's a very bizarre issue as I don't see that happening on the quad core CPU my laptop has. Have you tried the Soft GPU plugin and see if it makes a difference? You will experience an increase in temperature because the voltage goes up as the clock speed goes up, but as long as the voltages levels are within a safe level and the temperatures never exceed 100 degrees Celsius, AND if you have proper ventilation, there shouldn't be any issues. But keep in mind that overclocking manually (as opposed to Turbo Boost) will void the warranty. You must use caution as you overclock the CPU. I'm convinced the Intel GPU is the culprit for several reasons; one, OpenGL support is garbage, this is a known issue. Two, it uses shared memory with the system as opposed to having discrete/separate memory, affecting performance to some degree. Three, driver support is flaky at best and updating them can be a pain.

When I increased multiplier to 16 the lag is all gone, and laptop is working at 43-50 degree celcius chip temperature. By the way when the multiplier was 8 even soft GPU plugin slowed down if I put 2xSal in certain areas and in battles. As I said before, my older laptop was z61t and it uses integrated GPU too, so comparing the two, I see only the under clocked chip is the problem. Also, before clocking to 23 multiplier (intel's info is 24 so I put 23 just to be sure), my laptop warmed up a little more, close to 60 degree, and I was able to turbo boost a scene in Grandia Xtreme by Pcsx2 1.0 to around 100fps while the same scene suffered from 25-35fps turbo boost at multiplier = 8. Now I leave my multiplier at 16 just to enjoy some basic gaming, switch to 23 for ps2 emu and to 8 for web browsing/ battery saving |

2 Things I can recommend for you guys. 1. Use Pete's latest plugin, the OpenGL one, he stopped working on the D3D one about 10 years ago, and hasn't needed to update the OpenGL one since 2008. Link: http://www.pbernert.com/html/gpu.htm 2. I think what the real issue for all of you, is in the newer versions of Windows, the OS limits your CPU power based on demand, so your probably only using about 20%-30% of your CPU's power. I noticed this when I was playing "The Binding of Issac" I was only getting about 10 FPS, but this can be easily fixed by changing your advanced power settings. Here's How: - Open "Control Panel" and select "Power Options" - Click "Change plan settings" beside your currently selected plan. - Click "Change advanced power settings" - Scroll down and expand "Processor power management" (if you don't see it there, it's because it is disabled, and you don't need to worry about it) - Set "Minimum processor state" to 100% - Set "System cooling policy" to Active - Set "Maximum processor state" to 100% ![]() Now your CPU will always be running at maximum power, and your slow downs should be gone. Note: This will cause you to use more battery power, and the CPU will be more susceptible to temperature rises. Also my PC will have CPU intensive games drop to under 1FPS and my whole system will hang for 1-5 minutes unless I set the min and max down to 95%, and with some games 90%, so tone it down a little if you experience this issue. P.S. I'm running all my games (that I've tried) at max FPS and 0 slowdown or compatibility errors, at a 1680X1050 pixel resolution, and all of Pete's plugin setting to max, on a AMD Dual core 3.2Ghz (had to tone it down to 90% so 2.8Ghz) and an Nvidia GeForce GTX 550 Ti with 3GB of RAM. So your systems blow mine out of the water, and you should have no problem getting max FPS = ) Last edited by ForbiddenSoul; December 19th, 2012 at 07:46.. Reason: P.S. |

Even though he doesn't go around those forums anymore, who pays the website host to keep Pete's forums there?
