A small problem, concerning 'Frame Skip'...

I'm using VisualBoy Advance v1.4, and when I play any game, it doesn't seem as smooth as it should. So, I was checking my settings when I noticed it was set to 2 on 'Frame Skipping. Now, I set it to 0 and it was SILKY Smooth! But, the sound would pause and jump. The only way I can get smooth sound is with 'Frame Skipping' set to 2. Now, it doesn't matter what sound, or video settings I set it to. I tried this on 2 other machines and it's the same result.

So, how can I get VBA to run silky smooth with it set to 0 on 'Frame Skipping' and have good, smooth sound?

Thanks alot for the help.

Try changing the sound synchronization to/from Old Synchronization under the Options->Sound menu. If that doesn't work, I have no other suggestions.

My sound is on 22KHZ, and it doesn't matter whether VSYNC is ON or OFF, and i've tried the 'Old Synchronization' mode, but still have the problem....although I haven't tried setting the Priority leve to 'Highest' yet....i'll try it.

Thanks for the suggestions/tips, and write down anymore you can. Thanks..

One thing I know is that SB Live! drivers were really bad sometime ago, so I would try looking if updated drivers are available.

Thanks Forgotten. B.T.W, fantastic emulator!! Keep up the brilliant work!

As for the SB drivers, I checked the Creative site, and I have the latest drivers for XP. I'll try VBA in ME next. But what makes me think it's something else is the fact that I tried it on 2 other machines, which don't have SB Live!, and it did the same thing. Both machines I tested on are the equivalent of my rig. One machine was using ME, and the other XP.

I do NOT have auto frameskip on. B.T.W, I tested VBA in Win ME. Now, I'm using a BIOS with VBA, so everytime I load a GBA ROM, it shows the BIOS. Now, in XP the BIOS' sound chops, but when I try in Win ME, it doesn't. Now, still in ME, the sound chops rarelly, and the only game where it is bad in both XP and ME is Tekken Advance. Other games I try, like Mario Kart Advance, seems fine in ME, but choppy in XP. I have the identical settings in both XP and ME, with frameskip set to 0.

My only guess is that the sound drivers for XP are not acting properly. If you have multiple joysticks plugged, it may be worth a try to unplug them and see if it makes a difference. Someone reported problems when he had two joysticks plugged.

Hmm....interesting idea. I'm gonna try that, cause I have an EMS USB 2 converter connected, via USB, and a Microsoft Sidewinder Gamepad connected via Sound Card...

Alright, I testes VBA, running Mario Kart as the test subject..

I tested without the Microsoft Pad, I tested it without the Converter and I tested it without both.....still chops. I really do not know what to do. It's not as nice to play when it seems so choppy, when it's on Frameskip 2.....it can't be anything with VBA, could it.....

I'm gonna test a little more. Again, all feedback is appreciated completely! And thanks for your input, Forgotten.

EDIT >> Okay, I got it to work fine...for now. It's really strange HOw I got it to work, though....

You see, it had to do with VSYNC. I turned it off and now it's okay. Before, it was choppy whether VSYNC was ON or OFF.

I'll tell you exactly what I did. I switched my desktop resolution to 1024x768 @ 32bit, and I ran VBA fullscreen @ 1024x768 with VSYNC OFF....it worked just fine! Then I tried it windowed, and it still worked fine! So, I put my desktop resolution back to 1280x1024 @32bit, and ran VBA at 1024x768 fullscreen....it was fine! It's also fine windowed, so.......I really don't know what to think.....the only game that still has some chopping is Tekken Advance, otherwise everything else is fine!

also, from what i noticed, some games have subpar sound emulation, so there may not be much u culd do bout that.

On the otherhand, were u gettin the skipping sound even on frameskip 2? if not u may want to try compromising at frameskip 1 for tekken. Don't kno much bout athlon processors, but your processor may not meet optimum VBA req. (forgot what ehse are). Clockspeed is nice but ain't the processor itself not "top of the line"? Finally, if u do have a fast system try increasing the sound freq. to 44kHZ (better sound quality, more resoruces consumed)

[some1 correct me if any of the previous statments are wrong]

First off, my PC is just fine and fast enough!......well, for now.

And to answer you, ackmondul, I don't get skipping sound on Frameskip 2, and I don't get it anymore on Frameskip 0. I turn of VSYNC if i'm using any filter besides 'Normal'. I can leave VSNC on if i'm using 'Normal' as the filter.

Now, for Tekken Advance or Medal Of Honour, I put the filter on 'Normal' and it doesn't chop at all on Frameskip 0.

Some filters are known to have serious slow down problems... I noticed this ever since 1.3 but now I finally got Simple 2x to work without a slowdown using my settings.
