Epsxe and Video Cards

Here's a question for all you lurkers, posters, and whatnot. I'm curious to know what would be the best video card to use with Epsxe (and I guess everything in general).

Now I know that everyone has different computer configurations, be they Frankenstein type boxes or ones the bought from Gateway or Compaq. but I want to know what video card offers the best picture, the best stability, the best, well, everything for use with Epsxe in general and everything else in a broad scope.

I have a 1 gig Duron chip, an 8KHA board with 384 megs of DDR ram, and a real ATI Radeon 7200 with 32 megs of SDRAM, running at 4x AGP. (I know there are others like Powercolor that is 'Powered By' ATI.)

The graphics aren't the best in EpsxE, the colors are alright and it runs rather well with most newer games (NWN, HOMM 4, etc.)

I would give my card a 7.5/8 out of 10 for overall goodness.

I know we can do different tweaks and settings and different GPU plugins, but again, I'm just curious to know what VIDEO HARDWARE people use with Epsxe.

Thank you for your support.

Wind

ps: If this gets moved, my apologies to the forum staff for not putting this in the right spot, but I felt it went into EpsxE discussion.

geforce4 mx 420, pete's opengl. full speed and sound in all my games @ 800x600x32 quincunx fsaa.

9.8 out of 10 for overall goodness, only bad thing is no pixel/vertex shaders, not a big deal, my k6-2 couldn't handle em anyway.

Phoenix, funny you should mention "proud" owners of GF4 TI 4600 cards. I just happen to be one.
Wind30, the two top of the line video cards out right now are the Radeon 9700 (1st) and the GF4 TI 4600 (2nd). I have a GF TI 4600 made by Vision Tek. I using the Nvidia Detonator 40.41 drivers and a neat little Tweak Utility called aTuner. I run *X Anisotropic filtering in both D3D and OGL, 4x9tap FSAA for OGL and 4xS for D3D. For overall goodness I would rate this card 10/10 . It truly is a top of the line card. Here is a screenshot from NWN to show how nice it looks.
sincerely,

I’ve got a Radeon VE, which is one of the slower cards which can manage ePSXe with a reasonable amount of graphical enhancement. It’s a good choice if you’ve only got $20 to spend. I can get 2x antialiasing, 2xSaI, and screen smoothing at 60 FPS at 640x480 in some games. In others I have to turn off one or another of those.

I’m all for hearing about the less well known cards, like the Kyros and Matrox cards, and about the recent ATI stuff. I’m thinking about getting a new card, and ATI and Matrox’ multimonitor compatibility has been a bit better for me than NVidia’s.

I heard the 3dfx Voodoo cards are very good with emulated PSX games, if you use Lewpy's glide plugin. The anti-aliasing is better than current GeForce 4's.
But they aren't very good with new PC games..
I would recommend the GeForce4 Ti series, very good image quality + performance.

A Voodoo 5 PCI is the best card. As long as you pair it with a b****in CPU, it'll do the bizness.
If you want it to play new PC games tho, you is probs outta luck.
A GeForce 3 or 4Ti would be a better choice in that case.

I'm still using Voodoo 5 PCI (xp1800+) and play all the psx games in 800x600x32 with 4xfsaa (PC 2xfsaa), but I'm also realist and know that this card won't last for much longer. Graphic quality is simply superb.

It doesn't come as any big surprise to me when I read over these posts how you all use older and sometimes unsupported video cards, like the Voodoo 5. I guess it just goes to show you, as long as the card works fine as is, there's no reason to go off and buy a brand new one. Is it any concidence that a video card is the most expensive component to buy these days? I mean yeah, the Audigy bundle is up there, but a video card is worth more than a darn motherboard!

I was looking to upgrade my 7200, maybe get a 7500? Or do you think I should save my money for something else? Geforce? Kyros? Does it really matter to get a few more frames and a little brighter color? I can see already that for playing Epsxe, it doesn't really matter.

900Mhz Celeron, 256Mb PC133 SDRAM, Voodoo 3 2000 with Lewpy's 3dfx/Glide³ GPU 1.39, Sound Blaster 16 PCI with Eternal SPU Plugin 1.30 and Creative 52x CDROM with ePSXe CDR WNT/W2K core 1.5.2. Works splendid.

Oh Wind30, if you're going to upgrade get a Radeon 9700 or a GeForce 4 TI4600.

Hej, I tell you one thing: you buy what you can afford.

With 9700 out prices of 8500 are already low and the card is very good (have one myself). Why don't you check it out.

ct, your advice is something I always take to heart when buying new equipment, but lately I find myself hesitating to buy things because of what I hear on forums about it.

I always scour this forum to see what problems people are having or what hardware they're discussing about. I also visit the Rage3d forums to hear what people say about their cards. I wanted to buy a 7500 but looking at the Radeon 7500 forums, almost everyone hates the card! But it's cheap, has 128 megs of DDR ram, shouldn't it be good? Or the 8500, which everyone swears on, but again, complain, complain. Like in Neverwinter Nights, I've never seen so many people complaining over patch fixes like these guys, which makes me leery to get the patches in the first place.

So which is why I started this thread, to see what people have, what they like, what they don't like, and make a comparison there.

so, aren't you proud of your card, satisfied, happy. That's what I meant
With the GF4 Ti 4600 and the Radeon 9700 the games and movies look awesome.

Thanks fivefeet8. It was late and I wasn't sure if it had double posted or not. I don't usally do that.
Phoenix, yes, I know what you ment. That is why I said, I happen to be one. Yes, I am proud, haapy, and very satisfied w/my card.
But, like Lord Kane, I may be considering an NV30 when it cimes out. It all depends on what it will do and if it is THAT (caps for emphasis, not shouting) much better than the GF4 TI 4600 that i now have. Oly time will tell.
sincerely,
sx/amiga

According to many sources, the pure specs for the NV30 are astounding, let alone what they have done to the entire rendering pipeline, but like Sxamiga, I will wait and see if it lives upto the hype.
Until such a time, the Radeon should hold you over. If your driver issues are really so bad you need a different card to hold you over, a GeForce 2/4 MX will do the business, they are quite powerful cards, and unless you need pixel shading, they will to the job.

I'm going to try to save up for a Radeon 9700 or maybe pick up a Radeon 9000. Some of the computers at my school have a Radeon 7000 and the image quality is astounding. It's a lot crisper and cleaner than my display at home. The NV30 sounds interesting but a lot of the features are beyond the DX9 specs so I'm skepticle of their worth. Although both Nvidia and MS are working on Cg the MS Windows version will probably be standardized and it'll be built around DX9. If Nvidia improves their 2D image quality and implements smarter anisotropic filtering then I might consider the NV30 but I've owned 2 Nvidia cards in the past and I'm kinda sick of them. My next card will definitely be an ATI card.

I have played ePSXe with two video cards:

* 3DFX Voodoo 3 3000 AGP - 8/10

Image quality was amazing with Lewpy's plugin, so-so with Pete's D3D. Framerates were pretty decent too. I would probably have kept this card for another six months if there were updated drivers for XP.

* ATI Radeon 8500 128MB - 9/10

Excellent image quality, actually much better then I expected. Pretty fast, and no major game issues so far.

The drivers I use with my Voodoo 3 under Windows xp are excellent for emulation. Colors are bright, everything is smooth. As for playing new PC games.... I don't even try. Games aren't designed for Glide anymore. Patches? No thanks. I'll just get a GeForce or a Radeon if I want to play new PC games. It's nice that Diablo 2 has support for Glide. I just bought it.
