Just dropping in to say that once you install a start menu, Windows 8 is great. I'm using Start8 to do that - but there are free alternatives which I hear are decent.

It's a shame they took it away from their out of the box experience - but it's super easily remedied.

Yep. I install classic Shell onto every Win 8 machine that I fix these days. It's much better after that.

In my opinion the best startmenu ever made for windows. It's open source and highly configurable.... it's just amazing.

That is the reasony why i stopped using ubuntu as the experience is bad this days in comparison to older build. Ironically enough the latest version refuse to install on my computer so i tried Mint 14 and i really love it! everything works as it should and quite smooth. Zero complaints so far while porting my code and using it.

I read that Mint is kind of "the new Ubuntu" anyway.

Should MS really attempt to kill off the desktop in a future Windows version, I know where to go...

Mint 14 comes with a startmenu that is similar to the Windows 7 startmenu. It has different features and functionalities but it's pretty much the same in it's look and behaviour. Also the whole enviroment is quite user friendly for a Linux enviroment. The only thing that need to change are the development tools as those are nothing but terrible. However there is one tool that is slowly gaining @ruan's heart and that is QT5 which in combination with QML and C++ it pretty much offer the awesomeness that can be found under windows with C# and WPF.

I'm glad you had become more critical of the operating system you use and that you are trying new things. Please don't come back a few months later saying how everybody who doesn't like your new operating system is wrong.

Wonder how long before we see a free and/or open sourced version of that app considering we have classic shell which is basically an open sourced start menu unlike their start8 which doesn't even have as many features as classic shell does. SO I would gladly go classic shell over start8 just for the amount of features that classic shell has over start8

Most of stardocks tricks are well known to me and i can reproduce a big amount of there stuff myself... makes me think that i should start my own Company one day and start Fixing Windows and bringing apps with taste to Linux. Stardock is making Money from People necessity that is.... most of there stuff can be reproduced by me with very few lines of code and they ask for money.... Jesus.....

I gave up on the discussion but the whole anti-Windows 8 thingy is kinda tiresome... no wonder isn't doing well.... the whole world this days listen way too much to the media and get excited because of Hype. However i don't deny that MS Team have some serious design Problems this days...

I wont lie, i'm rather happy that it doesn't do well, in a way it is sad cause under the hood performance wise it is indeed quite an improvement, but their choice of interface is something that will never appeal to me.

I hope MS takes notice because here someone is adding the very thing back that made Windows what it is in the first place.

Although to be fair Vista had 4 big things going for it that 8 never had the advantage of.

1. DX10, probably the main reason why I felt myself forced to to pick Vista over XP back when I first assembled this comp. Win8 had no new DX to lure gamers with.

2. 64bit Vista > 64bit XP. More RAM was becoming necessary so people needed a 64bit OS and XP64 had a rather terrible rep plus who wants to buy the same OS they already have again just to support an extra stick of RAM or two. Win7 64bit however already does that job fine so no need for Win8 64bit.

4. Proper multi-core support was promised in Vista and so anyone with a new underused C2D or C2Q was eager to make the jump. Unfortunately those processors didn't actually have enough oomph to run the OS nicely but that was discovered only once a fair bunch of people had already bought Vista. 7 already does all the perfectly though so no need for 8.

3. Longhorn, everyone/lots of people wanted the Vista look long before it even became an option. Win8 might also look new and different but not exactly in a positive way.

Windows 8 failure have two reasons:

1. Microsoft team have some serious design problem
2. It's failing because of people's failure to move on
