Boosting fps and avoiding audio popping

After ditching my tower and going mobile I'm struggling to get xebra running full speed without using turbo boost or compromising accuracy too much. I did figure out a few ways to increase fps though

- set video cycles to 1:0:0 (seems to be frameskip)
- play in full screen (no idea why but it beats windowed)
- turn off all stretching (if you don't mind small window, or decreasing desktop res)
- use run 3 (maybe...very miniscule)
- increase cache rate (can cause slowmo effect)


UPDATE: This is weird. Yesterday I was getting audio pop at 2.8ghz with frameskip=1, today in the same games I'm getting almost no pop at 2.4ghz with frameskip=0. I think it's because I changed audio settings to support interpolation (n=0). I also changed cache rate from 18 to E. This is officially my new favorite PS emu!

I never changed any of the audio settings as other settings I tried didn't improve my experience or just ruined it.

My only problem is the audio popping in games that have talking like Metal Gear Solid. FPS is always a solid 60 for me, even in the most accurate run mode. I have experimented a bunch and nothing seems to fix this audio popping. The fact that it ALWAYS happens at certain spots leads me to believe its XEBRA's fault, not my computers'. I don't know if you were interested in trying to completely eliminate the audio popping, but as far as I know, there is no way to completely eliminate it.

^ Do you recall which parts of MGS? Maybe I can check and see if it happens to me too, because right now I'm under the impression it's directly tied to CPU power. Before enabling interpolation I'd get pop at 2.4ghz but not at 3.2ghz. Enabling it seems to have made the emu much more efficient

It happens quite a bit at the Konami logo when the game is first turned on, and it also happens in the intro right after the Konami logo, when Campbell says "and Revolver Ocelot", right after he says Ocelot. It also happens quite a bit with Brave Fencer Musashi, which also seems to have missing audio right after Musashi grabs Lumina and is being chased by that stone head.

My CPU is an i7 2700K at 3.5 Ghz stock speed

My Video Card is a Nvidia Geforce 570 GTX MSI Twin Forzr III

I'm in the process of playing through the entire PS1 games library, (USA games only and minus sports games and kids/movie games)

The first game I checked was Metal Gear Solid, I tried Synce's audio settings, and so far, I haven't heard a single pop or click. Here is my emulator settings.

Sony USA BIOS 1001

Video:

Stretch with OpenGL - Enabled
Stretch - Enabled
Whole Frame Buffer - Diabled
Nearest - Enabled
Progressive - Enabled
Cycle 1 - 0
Cycle 2 - 0
Cycle 3 - 0

Sound:

Min - 10000
Mid - 30000
Max - 50000
Span - 88200

N = 2
a1 = -2
a2 = 0
b0 = 1
b1 = 1
b2 = 1

Sync - Enabled

I Cache Rate - Permanently set to E

Using - Run 1 (Interprete)

Fullscreen - 1920 x 1080 x 32bit colors

Also, I'm running the game using a .img file. From which I created from my actual game disc using CloneCD. It creates 4 files;

Metal Gear Solid.ccd
Metal Gear Solid.img
Metal Gear Solid.cue
Metal Gear Solid.sub

I found that .bin/.cue have audio problems. I had ripped Brigandine using .bin/.cue and it cut off the first second or two of every audio track, not to mention it had random popping and clicking and static.

I have also noticed, that if you have ANY other programs open (especially an internet browser) it causes audio problems.

If anyone knows of other games that are having Video or Audio problems let me know and I'll check the game out, since I haven't seen ANY problems in any games I've tried yet, I would like to help out as much as possible.

Also, I will be helping update the compatibility list for Xebra.

That is really interesting...The original values I have for the sound settings are somewhere in the thousands, I would think changing them up that much would cause some kind of problem.

I also thought that .bin/.cue was supposed to be the best format to backup your ps1 games in.

I tried that "sync with real time" option, and it did not solve any problem, only made it much, much worse.

Interestingly enough, I remember the MegaMan games working fine, and they were in .img format, but all I had was the .img for each, no .ccd, .sub, or .cue. The other games with talking in them were all in .bin format if I remember correctly. Maybe I'll try that and see what I can come up with.

OK, just checked out Symphony of the Night and it was unplayable with the audio settings to the point that fingernails on a chalk board would've sounded better. So, I changed the audio settings back to the emulator default and it works almost perfectly, the popping and clicking is almost unnoticeable. Overall, I would say everyone's audio problems are with the settings, if someone could figure out a PERFECT setting for the audio, we would have the perfect PSX emulator.

I did play Metal Gear Solid in EPSXE awhile ago with the eternal plugin and the audio worked perfectly, so I do not think it is a problem with my bin/cue. I still stand by my original stance that XEBRA is at fault and changing the audio settings around will not make the audio problems completely go away.

Hopefully Dr. Hell chooses to revisit this emulator sometime in the future. Would be a shame if it ended up like Nestopia.
