Batman Arkham City

The game is even better than the first one, having really good time playing it Can't play it maxed though as I get 20 FPS only with DX11, AA and Tesselation on. DX9 is solid 60FPS though and I can't see much difference so I'm sticking with it.

How good is the game at telling you where to go?

Open World is great an all but to me it just seems it would mess up the encounters and thus feel of the game.

It maps every location or side quests you can do once they are initiated. Also, there are points on the map where you will hear victims being harassed, pay phones ringing, and other assorted baddies you can defeat for extra exp. Not to the mention the tons of hidden or in plain sight puzzles scattered around the city that you can mark on your map if you can't figure it out or don't have the correct bat devices yet and get back to it later.

My brother beat the game and was only 40% done. That means there are tons of extra stuff either hidden or side quests that he did not do. I'll post some screens of the game in Dx11 maybe.

I know there's tons of stuff to do. But I hate Mad Hatter levels in Batman AA (great to watch, but I don't really enjoy doing them myself) so for instance it would suck a lot if I ran into them all immediately or somehow disturbing the flow of the game in a similar manner like that. A linear game allows the devs to dictate the rythem...it's a lot harder in an open world.

The percentage takes the challenge maps in count. I was at nearly 65 % when I beat the game with half of the riddler work done.

About DX11, I guess you installed the patch ? I'm waiting for an official one and moreover, the game is already great on DX9. Apart (very) low FPS and more soft shadows, I didn't really noticed a great difference.

There is already an official patch and is the one I installed through steam. The only really noticeable difference with Dx11 is the tessellation used on some of the statues and the Ivy vines. I'm getting about 50 fps average with PhysX at High and Dx11 so I leave them both at their max.

Official patch which only works for 64 bits systems. I'm waiting for the "real official" one.

I guess the real deal is the PhysX. I saw some videos. Really nice effects for NVidia users. I must say FXAA does a great job even at low.

Some screens:

PC Configuration: Core I3 M350 @ 2.27ghz, Radeon HD 5470, 4GB of RAM.

Game Configuration: Resolution: 1024*600, DX9, FXAA at low, Everything at max but ambient occlusion (I couldn't tell a difference with it enabled so far) and of course PhysX off.

The game is fluid most of the time. Is there a way to activate a FPS counter ingame?

Ewww, dude you gotta play in English. Without doing that you miss out on half the soul of the game (the voices of Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill as well as others from the 90s animated version and other batman iterations).

It is the real official one, but not for 32bit users I guess.

I'm currently looking for a mean to put the game in english with french subtitles. If someone here have ideas... Seriously, I think they should find a way TODAY to let the player CHOOSE his language and subtitles INGAME. Lazy arses devs.

I must say even if they don't reach the level of the english voices (I heard Mark Hamill and he was just perfect), the french ones are rather not bad. They also hired the french voices for the animated 90s series (at least for the leading characters) and they were already quite good.

Oh ok, I guess that's a little different then. I didn't know they gave the french localization the same treatment as the original version. I guess it's better than I thought then.

Finally the game finished downloading through steam, I set everything to its maximum settings in DX11 except for tesselation being set to normal, the ingame benchmark spots an average 45fps which isn't too bad, but the game isn't completely smooth all the time, but its not exactly terrible either. With a bit of minor configuration I should be completely happy.

It does look gorgeous, the controls feel better, the lighting is much improved over Asylum, the best thing though is there aren't any pre-rendered cutscenes so far, all in engine which means no more bad compression and messy videos. It all looks crisp and seamless which is the best move they made.

So glad I scored this in the steam sales. Now to punch people very hard in the face.

You are at the beginning of the game. You'll soon discover some cut-scenes are pre-rendered ones made with the game engine. However, they are high quality (for me). I only noticed the difference when I saw the Batman beyond skin wasn't applied in some of them.

Yeah your right, and they are indeed high quality, seemingly better than the last game.

I also did some further benchmarks, I thought I had all the settings turned up save for tesselation, but I had PhysX set to normal and detail level to high instead of extreme.

With detail to high, and physx to normal I get around 45fps average
With detail to extreme and physx to normal I get around 40fps average
With detail to extreme and physx to high I get around 37fps average

Still smooth enough to leave the settings the way they are, the odd little hitch here and there isn't too distracting considering how gorgeous the game looks.

Purchased the Harley Quinn's Revenge DLC and it's fantastic. Playing as Tim Drake is pretty sweet, he uses a staff to smack goons around and moves a bit faster than Bruce does. Totally worth the asking price, especially during steam sales.

@Snicko

Do you reckon Steam's DLC will work with retail copy of the game? I don't want to get it twice just so I can get discounted DLC.

Unfortunately it won't work. While the game operates through Live, steam still requires you to have the base game before you can purchase the dlc.

Once you buy the dlc, you have to download it through Live which tripped me up for a bit.

EDIT: Also just remembered, running the game at 2560x1440 my system is able to average around 34 fps, with FXAA set to low, tesselation set to normal and everything else maxed. Very satisfying.
