The advice to go learn self defense is not meant to go learn a kick or a throw. Is to go learn to stay calm and assest the situation, and to possibly spot and avoid the situation altogether. And to also help against becoming a paranoid that pepper sprays everyone. You don't need to become a master for that.

And why I always mention the possibility of weapons? Because there's always the possibility of weapons. Some show them directly against you, some don't. Still, as useless as it is, a video would still be better than text for any tip.

And yes, some martial arts do teach you to be lethal indeed. That's why there's "martial" in martial arts, by mere chance. Then after many years you can still end up being nothing but a very effective killing machine! And more years later there might be a movie about you.

That is exactly what I said.
Nope, no need to be a master in that, just need that to be the master in everything else.

I wouldn't advice any novice to do anything when a weapon is present, video or no video.
It won't be a training; if you miss, you die.
There are better options according to game theory.

What you can learn legally doesn't teach you how to be lethal.
If so, there would be no one left in the dojo, they are all dead.

but yeah, some illegal ones indeed do something on that line.
Certain military training, for instance.
They use slaves/captives/etc. as targets for killing training.
which is really sad.

Power is supposed to be out for a week (!!) so I just checked into a hotel. The heat was really killing me. According to reports this is the hottest weather D.C. has had in over 80 years. Yes, perfect time for the power to go out. I had to through out all the food in my fridge before it rotted to bad.

Here power companies are entitled to pay compensation if the blackout lasts more than an hour or so, it really puts some speed on the repairs! That is, unless the area has been informed of the blackout in advance of course, in case of maintanance or something.

I had a week of electricity off during the flood last summer when I was in Jersey.
and it sucked...
We had to BBQ everyday; nothing to complain though.
Thankfully, our house is really high above the water level. The basements of our neighbors were drenched in water...
Water mark around the river is like3 floors above the normal water level. The mud mark on the tree is extremely obvious. Houses and stuff were all gone near the area.

Sorry for starting the debate on defense and all guys... in reality, I'd too in too much of a panic and at a loss to do much of anything. I was attacked from the side and behind by two guys while I was doing something (hands were not in the ready to defend myself either) and they went to grab me and stop me from screaming. As I said, were it not for my mother, it could have been bad and I might not even be here for all I know.

Anyway...

No air conditioning for a week? First world problems.

In all seriousness, a week without power would be bad. I remember back in the early-mid 2000s (2003 or 2004 was it?) when much of the Northeast was without power for like four days (by the way, the initial power plant that caused that is a city over from me) and that was lame. The storm just missed hitting here from what I heard, and I heard down in and around Columbus there were millions without power and the place was a mess. We pretty much got nothing though. In fact, there's so little rain and it's just been hot and humid and there's fire risks right now.

It can be first world, but living in 103 degree heat can be lethal, anyway you cut it. Add to that one of the sewage plants are down, so boiling water is advised. Which is not really a problem, if you buy bottled water. But thats hard to get, due to gas shortages, most of the gas stations are still down. I just want this to be fixed.

What about people that depend on electricity to live? O.o
Like life support and stuff.

I didn't know that "derecho" even existed. XD

Power FINALLY came back on, and now there is a huge ass wind storm outside. Well, the power will be nice while it lasts anyways.

Hmm.. Time Warner most have implemented some kinda feature like comcast's powerboost. I used to get a steady 2.5MB/s from beginning to end, but recently downloads have started at like 7-8MB/s for the first 20 seconds or so and then they drop to the normal 2.5.

We had a somewhat bad storm (moody sky, loud/heavy winds, and somewhat heavy rain), but it was relatively short and there was no power outage.

Per the internet thing, I think Time Warner at my old place was sometimes doing that.

I know; that's why I said "in all seriousness" afterwards. It's just that "no air conditioning, our city should be better/faster than that, I'll just rent a motel to have it" part of it just made me think of one of those first world problem things. The truth is, a lot of what we here (as in most of the people here, including myself) would probably more likely have to complain of would be, at least relatively, first world. Yours was an example and I just wanted to lightly poke at it. The thing is, as people, we need to be reminded again... and again... and again of some of these harsher truths of life and the world because we become forgetful, displaced, and ignorant (and I like to look at it as this is part of the purpose of bad things). In your example, we've had similarish weather here, and there's no air conditioning where I am period. I don't find it as dire, so I was lightly poking at it. Similarly, something I might just casually complain of might be first world to someone else who is in more dire situations otherwise. Nothing serious was meant by it, but sorry if it came across that way.

Fack, the hard drive in my laptop is failing. Oddly enough, it's a Toshiba drive, but Toshiba's diagnostic software claims it isn't.

Gah, I hate modern technology sometimes.
