VG Emulation Research Project - Collecting Data

Hello there forum fellows!

I am running a research about videogame emulators. I will probably document it as an article and make an infographic of it (which is my main objective). Thing is, I need to collect data. For that, I will be posting a few polls in the next hours. So, if you want help me to build this map, please cast your vote in the polls I'll be posting!

I will leave them open sometime but I plan to use their data as of 7 days after they are open. So, please, vote as fast as you can! :-D

Thanks all!

Only 7 days? I think you need more time to get more data...

Pretty big forum, I think he could get a large enough sample size in a week here easy. Remember, not everyone who reads and votes in anonymous polls is a daily poster/debater.

(that said, the larger the better) That's what she said.

A bit of objective criticism:
1) You should do a poll for console and handheld seperately. Also, DS emulation should definitely be included in 7th gen.
2) Poll 4 should have an option for "Neither". I for one only use my PC for emulation.
3) You should make the results public, if not by name.

Other than that, good luck with the article!

1) Poll 4 is handheld only. More polls coming soon!
2) But that's redundant, don't you think? The Poll itself is solely about handheld emulation, so we don't need to know who plays only on PC. I could a make a poll "On which platform do you play emulators" though.
3) I fear that people might get biased by seeing the results. But don't worry: I will post the results.

Thanks Smilley!

Yup! Plus I won't be running these polls only here, there are other forums I frequent too. :-)

Thanks for the inputs!

I think a kind of graded multiple choice would been better for this.

For example, in console generations you have the 7 choices and 7 points. You add one point to each generation in a grade, like from 0 to 9. One point for each choice, and only one point per grade (except zero, for not-emulating it). I think something like that would give nicer information as the preferred generation and the number of generations emulated per user.

Because currently, you not only do not have multiple choice for each generation you currently mess with. But even with multiple choice, you cannot tell either which one you use the most and which one is barely emulated.

I meant a poll about emulators of handheld devices (eg. VBA) and TV consoles (ZSNES) seperately. I'm torn between 4th gen for SNES and 6th for GBA. I never tried 6th gen home console emulation (and I probably wouldn't have the hardware to run it, either), and while I got into emulation through Pokémon Red, I dropped classic GB some time ago.
You might also include arcade machines (MAME) somewhere.

Yes, that would be a better phrasing for it.

Most polling pages have the option to only show results after you cast your vote. Dunno if NGEmu has this option, though. Nevertheless, good to know we'll see the results eventually.

yes, but that's not what i was referring to.
you can make the polls anonymous, but still show the statistics.

if you try to look at the stats for the polls it says "The results are hidden." (well maybe not for you since you're a staff member)
there's no reason us normal users shouldn't be able to see the data too.

only poll 5 seems to be configured where we can see the stats:
http://forums.ngemu.com/showthread.php?t=148249

also in the same way that anonymity promotes honesty, so does showing the live-stats to the users (honesty that the results aren't rigged in any follow-up report; though i'm not claiming MT would do that).

that's to prevent bias
Popular answers are likely to receive more results when not answering honestly
At least that's my guess.
And yes I can see the results once I've voted.

Anyways Mire has said he'll share the stats with us at the end of it all so your curiosity shall be satisfied at least eventually.
