School plans condom giveaway for prom

http://vitals.msnbc.msn.com/_news/20...cid=todmsnbc11

Quote:
Prom season is packed with choices for high school students -- which dress, which tuxedo, which music, which flowers? This year, students in at least one high school will have one more choice to make: whether or not to pick up a condom or two on their way out the door.
Bedford-Stuyvesant Preparatory High School in Brooklyn, N.Y. will make 500 condoms available at the school’s June 7 prom.
“As they leave the prom, they are welcome to it,” school principal Darryl Rascoe said in an interview. “We are not forcing it on anybody, but we want them to have that option.”
Worries about underage drinking or risky sex on prom night have prompted scores of prevention programs at schools around the country, from scheduling the event on weeknights to chaperoned after-parties.

But handing out free condoms as part of the festivities is a wrong move, says Valerie Huber, executive director of the National Abstinence Education Association, an advocacy group that resists comprehensive sex education in schools. “We are concerned that the distribution of condoms on school campuses further normalizes teen sex,” she told msnbc.com via email.
Principal Rascoe says he’s unaware of any opposition to the prom condom plan.
Bedford-Stuyvesant Prep, a small, “transfer” school of about 130 students which teens attend after having had academic, disciplinary, or other difficulties elsewhere, conducts safe sex forums and already distributes condoms through sex education initiatives. Other New York City high school allow students to request free condoms as part of HIV/AIDS prevention programs. The Brooklyn school also houses one of New York City Schools’ “Lyfe” (Living for the Young Family through Education) centers, a day-care facility for the young children of current students.
So when NV Healthcare, which manufactures NuVo branded condoms, offered to supply some for prom, Rascoe viewed it as just an extension of what the school already does. The Brooklyn school’s parent coordinator notified parents about the safe-sex prom program “and that, during prom, things happen,” Rascoe said.
That’s why senior Shaquana Brown agrees with the move. “It’s a great idea,” she said in an interview. “You know, there are after parties and stuff” where students might find themselves in a sexual situation they didn’t anticipate. She also thinks the fact that there’ll be context around the condom availability will help students make smart choices.
The prom condom distribution plan will be accompanied by a safe sex school assembly sponsored by the condom maker a few days before the prom. An essay contest on the topic of safe sex will be judged by the school’s English department.
NuVo has made a similar prom condom offer to other schools, although Bedford-Stuyvesant Prep is the only taker so far. The one-year-old company hopes the marketing stunt gets "the positive aspects of condom use out there," vice-president Ben Isaacs explained.

In fact, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that “schools should be considered appropriate sites for the availability of condoms, because they contain large adolescent populations and may potentially provide a comprehensive array of related educational and health care resources.”
For the Brooklyn school's principal, the prom condom plan is about the future of teenagers. Though students may have had trouble at other settings, Rascoe said, the “first thing that should roll off your tongue when you say Bed-Stuy Prep is college. We are trying to prepare you for college and for life.”
Getting pregnant, he said “is self-sabotage. It makes it more difficult to move forward and life becomes a struggle.”
... pathetic

Providing kids the materials to more safely do what they were going to do anyway? OUTRAGEOUS!

This makes the school sounds like one of those mom who tries too hard to make sure her kids practice safe sex.
"Are you sexually active?"
"..."
"Do you have condoms? Do you NEED condoms?"
"MOM. NO."
"You don't have to be ashamed! I can get some for you!"
"MOOOM! STOP IT!"

Anyway, I think condoms should be accessible for people who need it, but giving them away publicly at event like this one seems to send the wrong message.
Especially since this is mostly a marketing stunt by NüVo.

Let's hope they don't staple them to a piece of cardboard like they did over here.

The kids can afford to go to a prom but can't afford a 3 pack of condoms?

And frankly, only two condoms? Why not give 3 packs!

And is this discrimination against lesbians? Only gay male students and hetero students get something?

And will this pressure girls who don't want to have sex? "But babe the school gave us condoms...they expect us to screw tonight...."

I see you're a good little white knight as always. Is it that unthinkable that men (and boys) might actually be victims of this stuff too?
Young boys are being put under extreme amounts of pressure to lose their virginity (and do other stuff) with girls in their teenage years.

Right, because teenagers never ever have sex. Ever.

I guess since I grew up getting mocked by girls and most of the boys seemed to want sex, I rarely encountered boys who were being pressured into it. Mind you that was ~ 30 years ago.

+1.

I'm a prime example of this. When I was in school, it was common to be considered "gay" if you were a virgin and weren't interested in getting laid right away. Youth (and even adults) can be very superficial here and it annoys the hell out of me.

yeh i agree too.
roughly 95% of the males in my grade seemed to be of that mindset where you're gay if you don't want to ***** everything you see. I always saw such behavior disgusting and animalistic.
at the same time though, it was a disadvantage not being like that, because it means i wasn't "normal".

^ Indeed

Back then, I was easily swayed and quite gullible so I bought into that mindset and thought you had to be that way to be "cool", so to speak. Thinking for yourself at any age is a God given right; not to be taken for granted. Also, you should know as well as I do, society doesn't always have a clear picture of what "normal" really is. Example: in many parts of the world, being Atheist or Agnostic isn't considered normal, and you don't agree with that, do you? Btw, the analogy has nothing to do with me or my views, just making a valid point of where sticking up for yourself can be crucial, and this is the best scenario I could think of.

Hmm...

I read this article a few days ago. I see both positives AND negatives with the situation. So I believe that it may do good as well as do harm.

We all know that a lot of teenagers have sex, and prom night is a popular night for everyone to do such an activity. So I can understand how they want kids to do it the safe way. It's a good lesson and could actually help a lot of students that night from becoming pregnant or getting an STD.

However, the negative side is that some teenagers may want to have sex (when they maybe wouldn't. Notice, I said "some" lol) and encouraged to do so. Also, if the faculty is giving out condoms at the dance, kids are going to notice and SEE which kids are going to "do it" that night and may feel pressured to do the same when they probably wouldn't have. OR they do not want to get condoms in public and therefore have sex without it because they didn't want their peers to know. These are just obvious theories, anyway.

I'm all for safe sex and I want teenagers to be aware on how to do it, because, let's face it, whether we support pre-marital sex or not, teenagers are going to have sex. But I just see some negative points of view on it as well. A very interesting topic to think about, in my opinion.

Rather than promotion of safety, this seems to plainly promote hankypanky to folks otherwise not planning to engage into.
At least they've not gone all the way and started handing out porn mags and free copies of kama sutra.

nothing wrong with giving the kids some rubbers because they last beyond the prom night, they might help out a guy a month or two after prom

This should not be news.

They think the majority of their school population is sexually active? Cool, good move. Otherwise they're just overdoing it.

People will be having sex irrespective - that said, if this keeps even one person from having a baby, mission accomplished.

Not much else that ought to be said.

Preaching abstinence then handing out condoms seems counter productive.
