China To Launch a New Console

Quote:
For years now, there have been rumblings about the eBox, or its other moniker, the iSec. Yet, the console was pushed back, and then it seemed to vanish completely. Well, it's back and slated to come out soon. Real soon.

Now called CT510, this is the Chinese game console the Lenovo backed and co-invested in—the first of its kind. In China, video game consoles are banned. Yet, Beijing Eedoo Technology Ltd., the company developing the CT510, said this week that the console will be released in China on April 29. It will be priced at 3,799 yuan ($600) per unit, and it comes with eight pre-installed games.

Last fall, it was priced at 3,000 yuan, which was then $470.

Like Kinect, the CT510 features control-free motion-controls. According to Eedoo head Jack Luo, the CT510 is only the second home console to feature an entirely controller-free home console. The console is targeting casual players and not hardcore gamers. It also seems to be targeting people with $600 to spare.

China Daily reported that the console was delayed for about a year because, as Luo said, Eedoo required more time to "further improve the product and provide a better user experience".

Even though the console is slated to come out, it's unclear how this machine can bypass the Chinese game console ban, which outlaws "game boxes", and be legally sold in China.

And once it does go on sale, does that mean that Japanese and American console companies can legally sell their hardware in China?

The PS3, the Xbox 360, and the Nintendo Wii are widely sold throughout China, but via the country's gray market.

Here are the specifications:
Dual Core 1.8GHz processor.
High-performance 3D GPU Graphics Chip.
2GB DDR3 Ram.
250/320GB 2.5″ Sata HDD.
3D motion sensor.

Video output support HDMI1.3a.

System security TPM security encryption chip.
Power adapter input: AC 110 ~ 220V, 50-60MHz Output: DC 19V, 3.42A.
Remote control to support the 38K IR interface
Video player supported video formats include: WMV/AVI/MOV/MKV/MPG/TS/MP4/VOB/ASF/FLV.
3 audio playback supported formats include: MP3/WAV/WMA/APE.

Pro tip: The US + allies aren't China's best friend.

TPM will obviously be used to enforce monitoring and content control at user's level. Providing a homegrown mediocre alternative only makes sense to provide a minimum of entertainment services, where only chinese ones (their local facebook/twitterdropbox/google/etc) are used in place of those commonly seen in western consoles, on which they cant enforce restrictions.

Holy **** Kung Fu Live looks awesome. That jumping animation is the best thing ever.

And the console's body looks really nice and sleek, better looking than the 360 and PS3. $600 is taking the piss however. If it were much cheaper I'd buy one, for no other reason than to say I have it.

I wonder how long till the first one explodes?

But seriously speaking, I'm not interested... The part saying how it's for casual gamers made me lose interest, not to mention the look-like-an-idiot controller...

Certain gaming machines do make it onto the market in China. I think the ps2 released in China and they have other hardware that's legal but games are loaded in internal memory, can't remember names of these things though..

On a side note:

We laugh about China's product but we shouldn't forget that a big amount of our technology is made in China.... i could start by Apple's products and continue the endless list

It's not really the same thing... Sure they can make as many bootleg ipods they want, but I doubt they have the innovation and knowledge of what went into it to improve the existing one and design a better one. Of course it's possible, but I doubt it.

Besides, most factories in china are sweatshops where they work(or are made to work) like machines, each person puts on one or two parts and it goes to the next person who does his parts and so on... None of them actually builds one completely.

Why do you think China is still lagging in quality of it's own products, even when most things sold here are built there?
