I read the article every where there it says its a single GPU. Also considering they refer to the AMD Radeon HD 5970 graphics card as a dual GPU card (in the same article), i can only think of it as single...

AMD Radeon™ HD 6990, packing so much raw performance it delivered a new single graphics card world record score of P11865 in the industry standard 3DMark11 benchmark1.

It's two chips on one PCB. They're fully unlocked chips that are slightly underclocked (830 MHz core, 5 GHz effective RAM, vs 880/5.5 for the 6970). Out of the box, a pair of 6970s are faster, although the 6990 can easily be clocked up. Prepare to deal with the noise though, the fan is LOUD at full load.

Here's a picture of the card with the heatsink removed.

I've got a question...
Right now the Southern Islands flagship cards (the 79xx brand) have equal or greater performance range than the 5970 (single core cards compared to a dual core card), most likely due to the 28nm shrink and the new XDR2 memory type (8 times faster than normal rates, twice than the GDDR5)...
The 7970 consumes over 100W less than the 5970 at peak stress (about 190W instead of 295W).
My question is whether the 7970 is a reasonable substitute to my 5970?

Of course. You don't even need to look at performance to figure that one out since they're both X970 cards but the 7970 is obviously 2 generations newer which makes it the clear winner.

Just for those it may concern, if you're running nVidia video hardware, stick to the 275.xx drivers. The 285.xx beta, and even the 280.xx drivers, are known to have an infamous issue (supposedly confirmed by nVidia), namely, this...

...and it seems there's potential for hardware damage by running the drivers (at least if you get that issue occurring, but maybe regardless). I think it has something to do with power gating/voltage/whatever, I don't know, and it seems to be hitting GeForce 400 and GeForce 500 owners a lot, but I've seen of people on GeForce 9800 GTXs having issues, so I'd just avoid them regardless of what you have.

I have had perfect stability with nVidia drivers back to the days when I had my GeForce 6800 GS AGP, back when I would sometimes get the nv4_disp.dll BSOD. Since then, it's been perfect for me. That changed when I installed the 285.xx beta drivers and the above happened twice over about a few day span (and the first time it happened, I non-literally freaked when the monitor just lost signal), both times at the desktop with nothing heavy going on.

It's notably happening at the desktop, in Firefox for example, so if you have this happening, I'd highly recommend uninstalling the drivers and going back to 275.xx drivers. I'd heavily advise not to use the 280.xx or 285.xx drivers since there seems to be potential for hardware damage.

Heh managed to crash my 275.33 kernel a few times as well by being stupid but sure I'll wait, I rarely update my drivers immediately these days anymore since it saves bandwidth and since I only play the latest 6 a year down the line anyways by which time there will be even better drivers.

hmm, i have yet to see that crash on my end. Maybe because im using a non reference designed card? (assuming its on the power issue)

Funnily enough, Dragon Age II continually crashed at the exact same spot every single time I tried going there, when using the 275 drivers.
Using the 285 beta drivers, and that "not responding" business has happened once in the week(?) I've had them installed.

It only happened once or twice in the one and a half or so week I had it too, but as it happened during idle use and it's a known (and potentially damaging) issue, I'm not chancing it. I only updated to 285.xx for the sake of trying the Battlefield 3 beta anyway. Everything else is fine on 275.xx for me. I'll try and watch and update a little later after others report it's been fixed.

My monitor started seemingly failing, my speakers failed, and I don't need my GPU going next; much less with something known to seem fine but potentially slowly be doing damage. I'm not saying others have to not use it, but the feedback is out there and I wouldn't chance it myself, especially if you've had one of those crashes.

New in Version 285.62

This is the recommended driver for Battlefield 3. It contains several performance and compatibility enhancements for the final release of the game. Check here to see if your PC is ready for Battlefield 3.
This is also the recommended and enhanced driver for Batman: Arkham City and RAGE.
Check here to see if your PC is ready for Batman: Arkham City
Contains a fix for the driver timeouts reported with the R285 beta drivers.

Not sure if that means its been fixed or not

It sure sounds like it, but I'm going to wait on feedback before I update.

I am gonna be up for NVidia for the new cuda SDKs and hardware supports
OpenCL is like any opensource software, not much progress with lots of things you just simply don't need.
Cuda was flincky at first, but after 4.0 it's been working like a champ.
Even though the new ATI card might be up for gaming performance, but for truly GPU accelerated programs, NVidia still has the lead as it has dedicated SDK and toolkit designed for the specified hardware.
Plus, you can combine OpenCL and Cuda on new NVidia drivers.
Perhaps if ATI can fix its crappy driver, there might be a change.

Ungh! Apparently not! I just updated to the 285.62 drivers the other day, and I just had them crash on me! I was doing nothing but viewing a website and moving my mouse and suddenly it just froze and went out. I have to physically turn my monitor off and on again (it doesn't automatically kick back on when it recovers for some reason...) and then hope it's recovered, or I have to do it again until it does.

Checking the nVidia driver forum on OCN, it's still a known issue. To be fair, a forum for drivers is bound to be filled with issues by it's nature (and ATI/AMD's forum hardly looks better), but it did confirm that this issue seemingly isn't fixed despite what the release notes claim. So much for fixing this, right?

I'd stay away from anything nVidia after 275.33 for now, maybe especially if you have a Fermi. Everything I have works fine with those drivers, so I'm honestly just going to sit on them until a few revisions, at least, until I've heard it's actually been fixed.

I've been on the Beta 285.xx drivers since I got BF3 and haven't gotten those driver crashes with that error. I'm now on the new Beta and still don't have them. Must be some combination of drivers, hardware, and other software. Those errors did seem to appear on a few occasions with past drivers.

AMD's new darling's actually slaying the competition! Nvidia will be coming out with their own 28nm card soon so this is probably more of a temporary victory...

As soon as nVidia's 28nm card shows I'll lock this thread and put a up a new one (or sticky one if one of you guys already does so once it's time).
