If you are new to Linux.. rather than something optimized for performance you might want something optimized for ease of use. I'd recommend you to Ubuntu Linux, which is pretty much the most popular distribution, one of the easiest to use with one of the best support communities should you run into any trouble. And yeah, it's free of charge.

on the other way, theres also PClinuxOS 2007, an excellent, supereasy to use distro.

Ubuntu is Gnome-based. A popular distro now, so plenty of support.
PClinuxOS is KDE-based. A rising star that risen very high too, and very easy to use, with its revlutionary configuration panel, wich makes changing your parameters very easy

Well, the only driver i had to download here was the Nvidia one for GFX. The rest was automatically installed by linux.
You should only have to install GFX drivers, and for wifi chips. The rest will probably work with no problems.

I tried Fedora 6 back then, but didnt like it so much.

An application that automatically installs and configures the latest NVIDIA drivers for you is: Envy. You might also want to give a try to apps like easyubuntu or automatix so that you can easily install all the non standard apps you might be interested in.

Ubuntu will have a "restricted" (as in non open source) module package which contains the nvidia/ati drivers, that you can automatically download and install using the Synaptic Package Manager database. It's practically a one click install.

Yeah but it's easier to use envy in terms of getting the latest version. Only the stable one arrives to the ubuntu repositories

Of course not, but that keeps improving. Theres been another update recently. Apparently, Team Fortress 2 works now, for example. Photoshop CS2 works, if that materred to anyone

HERE is a List of apps that were reported to work on WINE

For hcore gaming, Cedega is the way to go.
Note: games that use rootkits like gameguard should not work, like lineage2 who used to work in linux before they added a rootkit to it, so last i heard it doesnt work now.

It really depends on the distro you choose.
