Involving yourself : Measuring one's dedication

Provided you were willing to donate for a project, to help sustain its development :

1 - Wich would you be willing to support ?

2 - How much would you be willing to donate for the sake of that project ?

I posted some projects as examples, but you're encouraged to discuss others.

ReiserFS is my main option The robutstness of this system will eventually completely replace ext3 on Linux distributions, so the earlier the better

A big program adopting GPL would be another thing I would be interested in, there are many good programs that people would be willing to port to Linux if they are just given the code for a little while.

Finally, Wikipedia is one of the most ambitious yet correctly based in a phylosophical way I've seen in my entire life, so my kudos to them

It's a bit ironic how the original founder of wikipedia is unhappy about the project... and started a new one... I wounder if he gets the donations :S

BTW I voted for UNICEF, I think the other projects cannot even compare... this would be my obvious choice. Though I donate to the child cancer research foundation myself.

yeah, UNICEF by far... i think human life is far more important than some filesystem or computer program.

wikipedia would probably be second, as knowledge is very important as well...

Well, the free flow of information is a great idea to support too.

I'm still surprised open cores isnt that known yet. Basically thats the equivalent of open source, but with hardware specs, anyone with production means available can manufacture his own chips, provided any improvement is shared again.

As the cost of entering the market and starting investment have now become really high, with the lead of Intel and AMD (wich have recoverd their starting investments MANY years ago), it becomes a necessity to reduce research and development costs for new entrants.

This removes a barrier to entry that allows Intel and AMD to trap Windows users forever (ever heard of Trusted Computing ? Open Core is an escape from such a totalitarian, Orwellian computing future)

HURD is a very promising and ambitious kernel, initiated by the GNU Project, founders of GNU and the GPL. The Linux kernel has supported Trusted Computing extensions recently, so keeping to use it gives no guarantee to escape from the reach of Trust.

I guess this should be normal, but other projects werent any less interesting in their way either.

i would rather not donate to Reiser4. i do not believe in company's that charge for linux based kernels. if you end up paying for a linux distribution, it may end up like microsoft windows and will have more bug and security fixes than press releases.

Considering ext3 is basically GNU/Linux's NTFS pendant, think about Reiser4 as an evolved WinFS, waaaay superior to ext3 (well, ReiserFS 3 was already giving ext3 some beating, but the 4 is VERY promising for GNU/Linux users and big businesses, especially contents hosters)
