Question Greatest Games of All Time?

I was wondering if their is any sort of official "must have" or "best selling" games list sort-of-speak for all the various video game consoles ever made to date. Maybe like a top 50 list for each console system. As well as the most well known and classic game franchises to date. I mean sure, for the most part I know a lot of them off the top of my head, I'm just wanting to make sure I haven't perhaps missed any.

Just name the genres you like and we can name some great games. Because there isn't such a thing as 'the best game'.

I'm just listing games that I'd easily pick up and play right now. Games that are at the highest quality of playability, addictiveness, etc. My numbering is there, as well as reasoning. I'd recommend getting these games if you haven't already.

Atari ST
---
Hunter (Totally 3D, total freedom of movement, 10+ vehicles, dress as the enemy, a 80 km2 world, ride helicopters, swim, hunt animals. And made in 1991.
Carrier Command (A "Bush 'em Up" . Destroy enemies, drill for oil, all over the world. Addictive.)
High Steel (Original game, construct buildings in a puzzle kind of way.)
Rodland
Resolution 101

Mega Drive
---
Chuck Rock
Sonic the Hedgehog
Sonic the Hedgehog II (probably the first awesome co-op mode ever made.)
Streets of Rage II (4) (see above, still totally playable even to this day.)

SNES
---
The obvious

Playstation
---
Adventures of Alundra (7) (Zelda: ALttP clone to some, but never-the-less an awesome "five-hours-passed-in-thirty-minutes" experience.)
Final Fantasy VII (1) (It affected me on an emotional level. My first RPG, but it was such an advanced game for the mid 90s.)
Final Fantasy VIII (6)
Metal Gear Solid (2)
Resident Evil (5)
Resident Evil II (3)
Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo (The first time i played this it was for 9 hours. I thought it gave me epilepsy. Addictive and extremely tactical.)

N64
---
Banjo-Kazooie
GoldenEye
Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Perfect Dark

Playstation 2
---
Devil May Cry (Most fluid combat system I've seen.)
Metal Gear Solid II: Sons of Liberty
Silent Hill 2 (Multi-layered, multi-textured and multi-ending storyline. Plus it's sexually aware without being childish.)

Gamecube
---
Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem
Resident Evil
Resident Evil 0
Soul Calibur 2

PC
---
Alien versus Predator II
Call of Duty (9) (One of the few games to make every freaking hair on my body stand up. The Russian levels: play them now.)
Deus Ex (8)
Half-Life II
Max Payne II: Fall of Max Payne (10)
Soldier of Fortune II: Double Helix (One of the best stress relievers you'll find.)
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
Tetris

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Any gaming site you go to, any person you talk to, and most people will all have different opinions on "the best games." We're more united on the worst games. I wonder the opinions of people here on games such as Daikatana and Mortyr...

I've not listed the overly-obvious. I work in an office, I'm tired of typing.

For the Atari ST games, i grew up on that stuff. If you are interested in games such as Hunter, i suggest you "hunt" them down as they are awesome and over-looked precursors and pioneers of games such as Grand Theft Auto.

First off, I should probably note that the initial title of this thread "Greatest Games of All Time?" is probably innacruate as to the purpose of why I posted this thread. I'm merely trying to establish a gaming hall of fame of sorts, where I include in a list al the most memorable games, characters, and consoles. More importantly, this is an "unbiased" list. So this list is by no means a personal "my favorites" sort of list. For example, I hate Pokemon, but you gotta admit, Pokemon is a classic game franchise so I included it.

1. Must have games that makes a given console popular.

There are certain games which gain a certain popularity that simply make them a must-buy when you get a certain console. For example, Mario Bros. games is to Nintendo consoles, as Sonic the Hedgehog games is to Sega consoles, as Halo is to the XBOX. These games are included in my games hall of fame list.

2. Games that introduce new and unique hardware.

Mostly what comes to mind for me personally in this area is light gun games that use light guns and racing games that use racing wheels, pedals, stick shift, etc.

3. Games that earn enough recognition to become a movie.

Fairly self explanatory. If a game series becomes popular enough to be picked up for a movie, then it obviously must have been a popular game.

4. Games that are popular amongst the game industry overall.

There are certain games that are just plain popular and best selling with everyone. Whereas there are certain game genres which are kinda in a league of their own which aren't much popular with the public at large. Genres such as sports games, fighting games, and rpgs just to name a few. Games in these genres I feel should go into their own hall of fames and into main games hall of fame.

There's probably some more criteria I can't think of right now that gives certain game franchises a spot in the game hall of fame. But if I have any more comments on this topic or responses to user comments, I'll be sure to post a reply.

In general terms... Lunar The Silver Star - Eternal Blue (original versions... not the crappy remakes) and Sakura Taisen 1, 2, 3, 4, V ep 0... my gaming life ends there...

I still haven't found 'The Greatest Game of All Time'

But some that come close for me for being damn fun fun fun! Are as follows: Ratchet and Clank (series) PS2, Jak and Daxter (series) PS2, Gran Turismo 2 (maybe 4) PSone, Giants: Citizen Kabuto PC (none of this PS2 remake crap), Toejam and Earl: Panic on Funkatron Genesis, Sonic the Hedgehog (1 to 3) Genesis ... Err that's about it for now. No games have really been outstanding other than the ones I mentioned. And no maybe they aren't as 1337 or whatever as FF7 (good god, that game wasn't all that!) but they were games where I had a blast playing them

GTA III - The game that started it all...

Starcraft, Half Life, Star Wars Dark Forces, Jedi Knight 2.

Two words.... NINJA GAIDEN!!!! If you don't have an xbox, buy one (I'm trying like hell to save up enough to get one....) That is THE BEST GAME currently out there (non rpg types, anyway) The best and most fluid battle system I've ever used, and kick ass graphics. I'm not going to recomment any other games, as it usually goes to a person's preference. But since I do not have a xbox yet, I have been looking all over for a game (that I don't yet own....the DMC series is kinda getting old) that even COMPARES to Ninja Gaiden, and I have not been able to find one. So that is why I am recommending it. (Prince of Persia comes close, but it's to much platforming, too little fighting.)

Hmm, personaly tastes differ so much. I donno, but I seriously I didn like Doom series that much.

Anyway, I wouldn't tank up these games but here is a list of my favourites to date:

FFX ....I really don have a taste for RPGs, but the story had something about it that made me love it....specially the emotional ending.

Metal Gear Solid.....all three of them and specially the last one and specially the ending!

Deus Ex both 1 and invisible war.

Resident Evil series........I just love these, can call me a fan.

Silent Hill 2 and 3 ....I am not a big fan of 1 and 4. In fact, I am still impressed by Silent Hill 3's graphics. It looks amazing even after Doom3.

Monkey Island, Day of Tentacles, Grim Fandango and Indiana Jones Fate of Atlantis.....Man, will I EVER forget these!

Devil May Cry 3, not 1 not 2 but 3 did it for me. I didn like the series that much before but DMC3 is one of those games which just gets better and better and absurd and weird and so cool that you use your bike as a sword and replace your skateboard with rockets.

Onimusha 3 had one of the best opening CGIs I have seen in my life, a great combat system good art and graphics, nice set of characters and a pretty cool storyline. So it is worth remembering.

Prince of Persia SoT, I really like cool characters and the prince is definetly one of them. Not only that, it had wonderful art, nice puzzles and just the kind of adventure game I like. I'll be keeping this one for long. Mind you, I didn really like Warrior Within.

I think I might be forgetting some, but that just gives me another excuse to post in this thread again
