Controller Problem with FIFA Soccer 96

I have a problem with FIFA Soccer 96. I am able to get the game working and i'm also able to watch the intro video and the demo mode wich is playing a normal game match computer vs. computer. The problem is that i can not start the game. No matter what keys i press the game won't start.
I tested the game Final Fantasy 7 and it was working perfectly, all keys i can use.
I have read that in some games you have to press the F5 key on the keyboard to use the start button of the gamepad, but that doesen't help.

press F5 and try it out, then press F5 again, etc etc, to cycle through the modes. that game is old so you need to have it on Digital mode (not analog/digital or anything else)

so basically the game isnt responding to the buttons you push?

make SURE that the buttons work in another game, IE play FF7 RIGHT NOW. i dont care if they used to work or they worked yesterday. try them now, just in case. go to the control panel and go to controllers and check to see if your controller is working there.

it sounds stupid but i helped someone before and that was actually the problem....so hey, it could happen

Try hitting f4 to turn on/off the SPU IRQ. That happened to me in wild arms, but once I hit that it worked just fine.
