Lightbulb Pure Math 10 Help!!!!

Arg, I have a test on this tomorrow and I have nowhere else to turn to because this stuff is way over my parents head. Anyways.

The subject is Adding and Subtracting Rational Expressions. I know the basics, all I need is someone to do all the steps on 2 questions for me. I know lots of you are math wizes so make me look dumb here

These are the easier questions. The problem with the last question is I dont remember how to get the denominator the same :eyes:. The top one I just have no clue what to do with it Thanks for any help you can give.

Lemme try the first one.

Now to find the lowest common multiple of the 2 things, we need to break them up. Let's try them one at a time.

1. y^2 - 9
You should know that (a^2 - b^2) = (a + b) (a - b). Which means that y^2 - 9 = y^2 - 3^2 = (y + 3) (y - 3)

2. y^2 + 5y + 6
This gives you (y+2)(y+3). I did this one too many times in high school that it's hard for me to explain this; however, notice that 2+3 = 5 and 2*3 = 6. See the pattern?

Now we have (y+3)(y-3) and (y+2)(y+3).

Taking all the unique factors will give you the LCM which is (y-3)(y+2)(y+3).

I have to worry about complex imaginary numbers now It's in my Algebra 2 book, but I'll have to borrow it from someone.

Complex's aren't too bad once you get used to it. Not too different from real alegbra, except for conjugates, but the basic premise of that isn't too hard to grasp (ie a+iy has a-iy as its conjugate).
