[Pokemon Emerald] Issues with trading

Hey folks, looked around for info on this but couldn't find anything

So I've been trying to trade from Pokemon Emerald to Pokemon Ruby using VBALink. Every time I try, however, I get the usual "link cable error" message...

Steps I've taken:

Tried different versions of VBALink (1.7.2 / 1.8.0)
Set save type to Flash 128K
Deactivated "Pause when inactive"
Activated "Synchronize"
Set priority to Above Average
Increased link timeout value
Deactivated wireless adapter
Avoided "speed mode"
Disabling sound

I'm running on a laptop /w an i5 2310 processor, 8gb RAM, windows 7 64bit and nVidia Quadro 1000M. I've traded between Pokemon FR / LG without issues, but Emerald / Ruby is giving me some trouble, so while it could be a hardware deficiency it's pretty unlikely.

Does anyone have any experience with this, and if so, any idea what could be wrong? I'll be checking back regularly, any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Turn off the sound on both emulators. ( OFF not mute) use the 1.7.2 version. I just had this problem a week ago. IF you want I can also do anything you want for you if you have the .sav files.

Tried the sound thing, no effect. Thanks anyway, though.

Ok. Well you need to have 2 different joypad settings for each emulator.
Then Save both games in the pokemon center, with 1 of the games go up and talk to the person on the far right about DIRECT LINKING. ( No wireless) wait until it says it gets to the screen where is says "please wait for other party" ( or something like that) Now go to talk to the person in the other game. after awhile it should link up.
