Looking at available budget comes before looking at available components.

It really requires a mid to high end computer to run Dolphin smoothly, if thats your only purpose, you might as well just buy a wii.
I have a AMD Phenom II quad core, 4GB ram and a nvidia GTX260 graphics card and i get full speed in dolphin generally.

if i were you i would save up the money and purchase all the needed parts at the same time rather than spanning it out over the couse of several months or whatever.

This actually sounds like good advice so just save your birthday money till you also have your christmas money.

Yeah that does help however PC components are constantly changing so it's best to ask only once you have the money, not in advance cuz by the time you buy our suggestions might be out of date and you may miss out on a much better deal.

You might need another power supply. 400 Watt is going to limit your choices when it comes to gpu. If you're going to be installing Dolphin with several isos you will quickly use up the 30gb too.

not to mention it's probably a cheap 400W meaning it's max rated and thus closed to 300W but he already seems open to getting a new PSU so that's not problem.

Avoid the 9850. It's a phenom 1.

In fact, we are in a transitional phase where 2 new generations of processors are being released at the end of the year.

The downside is that these processors are on new cpu sockets for both intel and amd.

If you buy a computer now, you're going to be locking yourself out of upgrading. Buying end of the line equipment that will cost you a LOT more money in the long term.

Wait til christmas.

The geforce 210 is not a bad choice considering your power supply, not the fastest card in the world (equivalent to a gt9400 iirc) but should be ok for Dolphin, which is mostly about the cpu anyway.

2.5GHz is a little slow for Dolphin so if you can overclock it a little, sounds like a good deal for the price.

Save up and do it right kid.

It's a senseless waste to fork out for an athlon x2, they kinda suck hard.
Not good enough for dolphin either in anything but the lowest requirement games.
You still wouldn't be able to play even those as you have no gpu and no power supply that wouldn't explode at the thought of one either.

Save up, get a whole new pc for Christmas or spring. Take a job

Then you have no choice but waiting; 1156 is dying, am3 is dead.
Thing is, you'll have to wait til both are out to see what's the best way to go, intel or amd
Either could be best realistically and the platforms need to be disclosed so you can choose the best motherboard chipset.

Building a computer is as easy as building with lego.
Buying a premade performance computer will add a good thousand dollars to the cost.
About 5 hours of google, 2 hours choosing parts and 1 hour of building. Is that free time worth saving $1,000 (at least) to you?

Intel have more power, for now. When AMD's bulldozer comes, it will probably be amd holding equal performance for lower cost.
Sandy bridge improves upon nehalem derivatives by about 10-15% per clock increase from preliminary tests.

Bulldozer is estimated to have 40-50% single threaded ipc improvements which would pit them well above nehalem's performance and at least equal to intel's sandy bridge but it's still the unknown for now.

By Christmas, the Geforce 4 series will be cheaper as ATI start releasing the 6000 series in October. Get a cut price 5770 or GTX 460 around then. Both are plenty fast and (relatively) cheap
