Lightbulb Good config for Final Fantasy VIII

FF8 works perfectly on epsxe v1.70, but I just want it to look better graphically.
I originally use p.e.o.p.s soft driver v.1.18 but it just makes the game look normal just like any other psx game on the original psx.
I tried Petes D3D plugin, and it made the game look better but there are no menus in battle scenarios.
The OpenGL and OpenGL2 plugins are too slow for my pc so I dont use them.
So are their any options to make the game look better with Petes D3d plugin and have menus in battles too?

Using windows vista 2GB of ram and an intel express chipset G33/G31 (which sucks badly)

Increase the offscreen drawing value in the plugin's config dialog and disable frame skipping if you have it enabled.

Hey guys. Would like to know the best FF8 configurations for my specific system as well! Figured I'd just add on to this thread rather then start a new one.

I have tried many different settings and I managed to get the game to look and run pretty smooth except for in menus. It makes no sense because the actual game runs okay but any time text or menu boxes appear on the screen it slows the game down. Any dialogue during the game is slow, any battle menus, main menu, or the experience screen after you win a battle is all slow and the music & sounds slow down with it.

It's really frustrating that I can play modern PC games but somehow a PSX game lags. I don't get it. Here are my specs:

Windows Vista Ultimate x64 SP2
AMD Athlon 64 X2 7750+ (Dual Core 2.7GHz 3MB Cache)
3GB DDR2 RAM 1066MHz
160GB HDD
GeForce 6200 Turbocache (128MB Dedicated, 1.2GB Shared)

This is my current ePSXe config:
Plugin: Pete's OpenGL2 Driver 2.9
Author: Pete Bernert
Card vendor: NVIDIA Corporation
GFX card: GeForce 6200 TurboCache(TM)/PCI/SSE2

Resolution/Color:
- 1024x768 Fullscreen - NO desktop changing
- Internal X resolution: 1
- Internal Y resolution: 1
- Keep psx aspect ratio: off
- No render-to-texture: þ

- Filtering: 6
- Hi-Res textures: 1
- TexWin pixel shader: on
- VRam size: 512 MBytes

Framerate:
- FPS limitation: on
- Frame skipping: off
- FPS limit: Auto

Compatibility:
- Offscreen drawing: 1
- Framebuffer effects: 2
- Framebuffer uploads: 0

Misc:
- Scanlines: off
- Mdec filter: on
- Screen filtering: on
- Shader effects: 0/1
- Flicker-fix border size: 0
- GF4/XP crash fix: on
- Game fixes: on [00000002]

Any ideas on what to do? I also have been trying to get vibration to work in this game. I have a Siatek Cyborg V.3 Rumble game pad. I set the pad to DualShock and Rumble to "DXJoy1" and Big Motor: Sine and Small Motor: Constant. Went into FF8 and turned vibration to ON but haven't felt vibration....not even sure when vibration is supposed to occur. I guessed in FMVs and battles but it isnt working.

ANY HELP is highly appreciated!

Okay here are the settings I am using now with the OpenGL driver instead of the OpenGL2. MUCH BETTER! The menus work fast now and the game runs smoothly. However, I feel like I can make it look even better since my computer is a little faster then yours. Which settings can I set to a higher performance to go along with all the Virtual RAM and CPU power I have???

It says that my Total Available Graphics Memory is 1407MB. 128MB Dedicated, 1279MB Shared. So can't I put a higher MB than 256 in the VRAM box??

What's up with the 53 fps limit? It should be at 60, or Auto.

You might want to check this thread out for OGL and this one for OGL2.. Keep in mind though that this is the Playstation we're talking about and you're playing a 10 year old game--there's only so much graphic enhancement you can do

I'd recommend OGL2 for the most graphic enhancement. If you're having menu slowdowns, try changing the texture filtering setting---6 is known to cause slowdown in RPG menus. You can normally flip through the texture filtering using the in game menu, but as I remember from my testing it doesn't effect FF8 properly. This might've changed with the new ePSXe and Pete's plugins though, I haven't tried in a couple years.
