Can't even get started! Help please

Hi,
i've got a bunch of ps1 games i want to play on my pc, not hard to gues from my username most of them are crash bandicoot ones, in particular crash team racing. One problem. I'lve download the epsxe emulator 1.7, extracted it to my desktop and when i click on the icon to load the emulator i get an error message:

This application failed to start becuse zlib1.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.

I'm running windows xp and have intel extreme graphics 2.

Also hopefully with this communitys help this gets sorted, is it just a case of putting the game into my cd drive and running it?
Thanks

get that .dll file here and put it into the windows\system32 directory. you will need to set up your plugins and configure them once that is done. it would be useful to have the rest of your system specs on hand in case you run into any problems.

the opcode error message is addressed in the FAQ. if none of that fixes the issue post your video plugin settings as well as the rest of your plugin settings. i recommend you play from images instead of the game disc because you will often get better performance. if you need to know how to do that, read this thread.

Crash Team Racing is copy-protected (at least the PAL version is) and therefore needs a cd drive (and cdr plugin) which is able to read the sub-channel data from the game cd.

I have found that this subchannel capability differs between ASPI and IOCTL among drives,

For example, with ASPI, my old CDRom and CDBurner can read subchannel, but via IOCTL only my DVD Burners can read subchannel, Drivers, are also another variable.

You would find it best to make an image (CCD, Bin/Cue, or MDF) and mount if off a virtual drive.

Never heard of subchannel errors causing opcode crashes though... usually its just a failure to start.

I own the original CTR PAL game cd, so I know for certain that the copy protection is crashing the game exactly in the shown way.

Of course you have to make sure that the image files contain the sub-channel data (I don't think that the BIN file format will store such).

the Bin format does seem to hold subchannel data somehow. I was using it with FF8 recently before i cleared off some space.

CTR runs fine in epsxe 1.6 via BIN image.

I just have to enable SPU IRQ hack in sound configuration, everytime I play the game.
