the NTSC does not contain copy protection like most PAL region games have (most not all though, im not really sure if MGS does or not although it is likely). you should try making an image of the disc in either .bin/.cue, .ccd/.img/.sub, or .mdf/.mds. and you might have to mount the image onto a virtual driver afterwards (it doesnt need to be done in every case so you might not need to do it here).

I'm running the NTSC version from an image file. Actually, it's not impossible that this is why the sound worked during the actual videos, since I was running the PAL version from my own disk.

It was my first thought actually. Tried making an image of the PAL version the moment the problem appeared, but as soon as I saw the "read-errors" Nero was giving, I cancelled the process. I'm good with the NTSC version and pSX for now... even with the occasional freaky BEEEEEEP that pops up at random.

And it is great that you have tested it with PSXeven, I use that emulator most of the time (and I find it better than ePSXe )
Hey I had trouble playing MGS, wondering if you could help. I have to use the keyboard, and all has been going well until the point where you need to dial Meryl's codec number, I can't find the key to change the number! Please help, thanks.

just look at the pad config to see where the buttons are mapped to.
