OGL2 plug-in question
hi, it's me again. I haven't posted here since...I think spring
anyway, I have a question. Since I now have a better card and a better system, I am able to run psx emulators more efficiently. Anyway, I remember reading a tip to use the opengl2 plug-in for games with missing screens. So, I used it. I see all of the missing screens again however, is it just me, or does everything look like it's software-rendered? Is there a way to make it all look better w/this plug-in? Here's my settings Plugin: Pete's OpenGL2 Driver 2.7 Author: Pete Bernert Card vendor: ATI Technologies Inc. GFX card: RADEON X300/X550 Series x86/SSE2 Resolution/Color: - 800x600 Fullscreen - NO desktop changing - Internal X resolution: 1 - Internal Y resolution: 1 - Keep psx aspect ratio: off - No render-to-texture: off - Filtering: 5 - Hi-Res textures: 0 - TexWin pixel shader: off - VRam size: 128 MBytes Framerate: - FPS limitation: on - Frame skipping: off - FPS limit: Auto Compatibility: - Offscreen drawing: 2 - Framebuffer effects: 3 - Framebuffer uploads: 1 Misc: - Scanlines: off - Mdec filter: on - Screen filtering: on - Shader effects: 0/1 - Flicker-fix border size: 0 - GF4/XP crash fix: off - Game fixes: off [00000000] everything runs smoothly in case you're wondering |

That plugin does not support fsaa so you can try and enable high res textures.

you can also try some shaders to smooth it out, see if that helps you. there are a lot at www.pbernert.com which you can try and see how you like em.

Yeah the reason it looks bad is because it's actually running at a somewhat low resolution. The plugin renders to a texture at a set internal resolution in order more closely simulate the PSX frame buffer and then more or less just stretches that texture to fit the screen.
So while you migh have the plugin screen resolution set to 1024x768, the game might only effectively be displaying at 640x480. Without getting too technical the problem is related to the max texture size on ATI cards which is only 2048x2048 on any card except the new X1X00 series, while nVidia's max has been 4096x4096 for some years now. For a lot of 3D games, the OGL1.76 plugin yields better image quality because it actually renders at the set resolution and you can use AA. But of course it has less compatibility and framebuffer effects don't work properly. |
