ff9 slowdown error?

in final fantasy 9 i get a big slowdown everytime a spell is cast that has a special effect in battle.
specifically in the "for show" battle at the beginning with the SFX moves.

it happens with practically every spell. any help would be appreciated.

this is what im using for a configuration:

oh and it does it with the binary file and the actual cdrom.
the disc is in mint condition.

the FPS drops from 60 (ntsc) to about 30-50. 30 and 45 being the most common.

np
I think the effects were slowing down cuz of these 2 settings
Framebuffer Textures - 0
Framebuffer Access - 4

this enable's FVP (software drawing)
which somehow slows things down, it happened to me until I switched it to another setting
