Pete's OpenGL and multi monitor

I run my machine with an nVidia geForce 3 with a Voodoo 5 in tow in multi moitor mode.
The problem is that this means that although I can use his d3d plugin fine, the OpenGL plugin fails to initialise in full-screen properly. I get audio, and the desktop res has changed, but I get no picture. If I disable the second monitor it's fine.
Any idea if there's another way to get around this?

This won’t help much, but OpenGL does work fine on my three monitor / two ATI card setup. So it’s at least possible to use OpenGL with multiple displays.

Have you tried disabling hardware acceleration on the second monitor? That’s worth a shot.

No. My GeForce is strapped to my 19" and my Voodoo to my 17"

There is no solution for OpenGL with MSWindows multi-monitor mode. I've descriped that in my very first fairy tale (can still be found on my homepage), and there is also a MS knowledgebase article about it. As long as the multi-monitor mode is enabled, Windows falls back to the MS software OpenGL drivers.

ATI seems to have found some way around the problem — OpenGL works fine with my three monitor setup, even if the desktop and game resolutions differ. The picture can only go on the main monitor, but that’s okay with me.

Oh OK. Thanks for the info Pete, however, I'm not sure that is correct on XP as I can run Quake and Tenebrae no problems. If possible, could you give us a link to the Knowledge base article, as I couldn't seem to spot anything.

ah, no, as far as I know WinNT/2000/XP should be able to do OpenGL hw/accelerated in multi monitor mode (if the gfx card drivers support it). Only Win95/98/Me had the software fallback (and there was no way around it).

edit:
funny enough, here's a FAQ entry from nVidia:

  1. Because I don't like ATi after they badly screwed me at least once already
  2. if I were to replace this card I would get an nVidia
  3. Because I don't need a new card
  4. Your ATi is multi monitor on a single card, and I expect you would have similar issues if you had another card like the Voodoo 5 PCI

I should have said — Yes, my operating system is Windows XP Home SP1.

Getting ATI cards isn’t a cure to all multimonitor ills. My experience is that the ATI cards do have better odds of working together than nVidia’s. (Old Matrox cards have the best record — Both Matrox PCI cards I’ve used work just fine with any AGP cards I tried.) But I’d strongly recommend that anyone planning to use multiple video cards make sure to get the card from someplace with a 100% money back policy. That way you can return it if it doesn’t work well with your setup.

Kane,

Did you try disabling acceleration on the secondary monitor? That has solved a lot of problems for me in the past.

Kinda defts the object of me running with a Voodoo 5 in there, doesn't it? If I were gonna do that, I'd plonk one of my plethoria of S3 trios in there and use the Voodoo in my backup machine. It takes just a moment to disable the second card, but it'd just be nice if I didn't have to.
