Unhappy FFIX Mdecs video glitch (kinda weird)

Hi everybody and by the way, to whom it may concern, nice work for ePSXe and all those goods plug-in.

Now for the bad part...

I, too, got some problem while playing MDECs in FFIX. By some problem, I mean that the right side of the mdec become garbled (kinda greenish) and it make sPSXe crash sometime...

My Video configuration is:

Plugin: Pete's OpenGL Driver 1.1.50
Author: Pete Bernert

Resolution/Color:
- 640x480 Fullscreen - Desktop changing [32 Bit]

Textures:
- Default
- Filtering: 4 - edge clamping supported
- Caching: 2 - 109 textures usable

Framerate:
- FPS limit: on
- Frame skipping: on
- FPS limit: 65

Compatibility:
- Offscreen drawing: 2
- Framebuffer texture: 1
- Alpha multipass: on
- Mask bit: on
- Advanced blending: on (hardware)

Misc:
- Scanlines: off
- Line mode: off
- Unfiltered FB: on
- Dithering: off
- Full vram: off
- Game fixes: off [00000280]

If anybody could help me, I'm open to any suggestion (except buying another computer). By the way i'm using DirectX8. and I got a Guillemot Xentor 32, TNT2 Ultra with 32 meg or ram. My computer is a p3 733 mhz with 128 meg PC-133 with an SBlive value. I've already read about all the post on mdec and FFIX and i didn't see something that look like my problem.

What's your driver version..if u got DX8..u should use 12.90
in case it have fully supported DX8
after u've both of it..try the setting as below..it runs fine on my GForce 2MX..and i guess ur TNT2 Ultra has the capability to run smoothly on epsxe too
ps..unchecked the "FrameSkip"..use the internal core SPU
and unchecked the"unfilter framevuffer" too

Thanks, I'll try that but I think it has to do with DirectX8 in my computer...

After sending the post I went to see what version of directX I had and DDraw crashes each time I load DXDiag...

Guess that mean one thing, I'll have to do a fresh Windows install...
I'm gonna tell if it fix my problem after that...

If it's the pro..instead of re-installing windows
maybe u should try DxUninstaller to unstall DirectX
can be found out there somewhere..
u know..sometimes re-install windows quite annoying thing

Try just reinstalling directx over top of itself first. If that doesn't work, then you might have to uninstall it then reinstall. But RedJacket is right, you should'nt have to reinstall windows unless directx is REALLY messed up...

well i read that directx cannot be uninstalled unless you reinstall windows. but you could also try getting the dx 8.1 beta (i have no idea where you get it) as it isnt on microsofts website.

hmm..as a matter of fact..i onced installed DX8 and then
unistalled it..installed it again few days later..uninstalled it one
more time ..and my window's still very healthy..few blue screen.
seldom crashed..
The matter is one should really be careful when trying to
uninstall DX..it's sensitive..very sensitive..like a virgin
handle it with care..

I seem to have the exact same problem as the OP. I often get greenish checkerboard distortions on the right side of my screen during FMVs. They sometimes cause crashes, sometimes freeze for a few moments and skip past the FMV, and sometimes just play as normal, except with green distortions.

Also, many of the FMVs (so far I haven't played very far, but pretty much every one except the startup and the "new game") do not have sound. I don't think this is a related problem, but it might help. If it's an unrelated problem, or it doesn't get solved in this thread, I'll start another thread about it.

I'm not very good with computers, but I'll try to give out as much helpful information I can about mine. I can also attach a snapshot, if needed.

I'm using a Pentium 3, 833MHz IIRC, with 128MB RAM, and a GeForce 256 AGP graphics card. I think I'm using DirectX 8. And that's all I know about my computer.

same things...

Yeah this is exactly what's happening to me too. (green checkered on the right side of the mdec, sometimes skipping the whole mdecs or crashing while playing it). In a way, i'm glad i'm not the only one to have this problem...

But the sound plays in my mdecs. It's really skippy (the bush kangaroo) but it plays...

By the way, don't bother reinstalling your windows 98 and directx 8.0a. I did and ePSXe keep doing the same thing in final fantasy 9. So it gotta be something else. And I tried to change the GPU plug-ins and for each of them it does the same thing...

Anyway I got bored last day and decided to buy a PSone and FF9 but i'll keep trying to figure what's wrong...

I'll keep you informed

When that sort of things happens, most of the time it(s caused by a scratched CD(BTW,I'm quite sure that it's a burned copy,no offense).

No offense taken but it was the originals disks I was using but still, since they were a rented copy, they could have easily been scratched a bit...

I don't have access to my computer right now (i'm at work) but i'll try with the original version of FF9 i've just bought yesterday when i'll get back from home...

By the way, i'm wondering...Those rented CD played just fine in my PSone, no glitch or anything... So it's possible to have some glitch in ePSXe in the mdecs because of a scratched CD, and none with the same CD in a PSone? Is it because the PSone have better reading capability(enhanced buffer or else?) than an ordinary computer CD-rom reader?

Maybe these issues have already been reviewed but I don't remember seeing them in another thread

By the way, thanks for the help...

Well,I think it's caused by the fact that the PS lens is made FOR PS1 games.
You can also try to limit your CD drive speed to 2x(PSX speed).

First determine if there is a problem with the CD, it may be scratched or have fingerprint smudges. You can easily clear these with tissue paper.
Also, if you have a friend with the same CD, try borrowing it from them and runining it on your system. If it works then you'll have confirmed that your CD is defective.

(Personally I think the cd just needs cleaning)

The problem probably is scratches on the CD. I am using an original copy of FF9, owned, not rented, but it is pretty old. Now that I've checked, there are quite a few scratches, mainly on the Disc 1. Discs 2, 3, and 4 are virtually scratchless. I guess I'll just have to get onto another disc to make sure that it's just scratches causing these problems. But I have already beat the game a long time ago, and pretty much got bored of it. This just appeared to be a popular emulated game, so it was my epsxe test-game, to test out the emulator and make sure it worked. I wasn't really planning on playing through it.

If a kind person would volunteer to upload a memory card with a saved game past Disc 1, I would be grateful. But if not, I wouldn't mind playing through this game again, as it is a really good game.

you can go find save games on the net..... try www.gamefaqs.com and download some savegames that are on the later disks to try epsxe on.... They are in dexdrive save formats but you can use some of the memcard managers to convert them to epsxe memcards or use epsxe executor and import them straight into a memcard...

okay ive been looking into this and learned that its not spu or gpu that affects the mdecs, but rather the cdrom driver. i tried using petes cdr, and although the distortion was still there it was significantly reduced. the downside? it's ridiculously unstable for me.

anyone else look into this? this isnt a case of scratched cds.

well...

After reading around on the other thread, i've finaly stumbled on something interesting (not that the other post thread aren't interesting...).

In some other thread some member ( I can't remember who) had tried the epsxe emulator on two computer to have the green checkered mdec problem. To make a long story short, he said that both computer had Asus CD-ROM drive. I, too, have an Asus CD-ROM Drive so I guess that's it.

Anybody who got this problem, check your drive, if it's an Asus, well we'll have our answers...

Thanks for the help...
