Vsync in Pete's D3D

Because the OGL2 plugin is running slow for some reason (chances are Catalyst is to blame), I've switched over to the Direct3D plugin. I'm very impressed; It's looking nice (not quite as nice as OGL2, but still pretty good) and running damn faster at a higher resolution.

I'm getting a problem getting vsync to work though. I tried forcing it in the Catalyst Control Center (tried both "Default On" and "Always On" options) but this doesn't do anything. The OpenGL plugins (1 and 2) are both vsynced for whatever reason. Both the default D3D driver and the DX6 driver show the same behavior.

I'm using ATi Catalyst v8.6 with ePSXe 1.70 and Pete's D3D driver v1.77 on Windows XP. My graphics card is a Sapphire Radeon X800 Pro and I'm trying this on Final Fantasy 9 if that matters.

Have any idea what's going on here? Google shows some posts on Pete's message board that haven't really received much attention yet, but I'm keeping track of it.

Just as terribly as OGL2 for some reason. I don't get it. Two years ago I played through the same game using OGL2 with no problems, then black triangles showed up some driver updates later, and now it's as slow as hell. ATi needs to get their act together, either that or it's because I'm using Catalyst this time. I used to use only Omega drivers, but lately the author has put driver updates on temporary hiatus for personal reasons.

EDIT: I guess I should tell you that even the P.E.Op.S software plugin runs much faster than OpenGL1 or 2. It doesn't really make any sense.

you said you are using 8.6 have you tried 8.5 instead? downgrading sucks most of the time but if you really had to you can go back as far as 7.4 which is the one that was right before the set that the OGL problem started in.

Yep, this is tempting. I'm going to wait until the 8.6 Omega Drivers are released and then make my decision. Until then, I'll just stick with the D3D plugin because it's showing incredible performance. I just find it odd how I can't get vsync working. I should probably try other D3D applications to see if it shows the same behavior.

i cant use vsync with the d3d plugin (one of the reasons i switched to the OGL2), and it doesnt work when i attempt to force it onto epsxe via my nvidia control panel either so im not sure if vsync is something that can be done with the d3d plugin. i hate to sound bleak, i mean there could be a way to do it, but at this point i am not really aware of one.

Wow, really? I guess it makes sense, there's not even an option in the plugin preferences to do it. Don't you think that's kind of odd though? I'm sure Pete has a good reason for it regardless.

did you read the part of Hushy's faq that says ATI users will get slowdowns unless they specify the available video memory, This has been found to be the case on most plugins.

The game is running way too slow. I have an ATi/AMD graphics card.
  • Recent drivers do not report the amount of VRAM correctly which causes Pete's plugins to have an overall slowdown. To fix this, simply set the memory amount manually within the settings dialogue.

Are you serious? How on Earth did I both miss that post and not try that setting? I'll give it a shot immediately.

EDIT: Yep, that seemed to do the trick. Many thanks Squall.

that was only added recently, but it helps to always check the faq when checking new plugins, hushypushy, tries to keep it as updated as possible.

How ever, ATI has had this issue on and off, dating back to Cat4's

This is one of the reasons I stick with nVidia ATi's drivers simply aren't as hassle-free as nVidia's.
