Yeah. When I go to somebody I instantly notice the low refresh rate.
When I change their refresh rate they usually can't tell the difference. I used a lot of themes on XP, both dark and light (silver included) and never had any problems. I don't know exactly what's the difference with Vista.

@Shendo: Vista uses ClearType by default for everything. I don't know if you've ever tried it in IE7 on XP (mainly to see the difference instantly between it being on and off), but I always keep ClearType off in IE7 because everything looks a little blurred on my LCD (never tried CRT, but I assume it'd be the same). Funny enough, it has a similar blur to when I switch between 60 Hz and 75 Hz without adjusting the monitor to compensate afterwards. My mom has a 22" widescreen LCD on her Windows MC2005 machine, and the first thing I commented on (and tried to fix) was everything looking like it had ClearType on (that damn blur). I don't know if MC2005 has ClearType enabled in the system by default too, but it bugged me beyond belief.
As for refresh rates... I don't really *see* a difference on the monitor between 60 Hz and 75 Hz on this LCD. I do seem to get less headaches when on the computer for hours though. Could be a placebo effect though, since it was by patrickp's recommendation that I changed the refresh rate, after he explained that 60 Hz gives him headaches too.

I know. I use ClearType in XP too and like it, that's not the problem.
Meh anyway, I'll deal with it when I will have to switch, for now it's XP and Ubuntu which are working fine for me.

I never could understand why they ever created ClearType, and why they called it "ClearType". It's pretty much the exact opposite... it makes the text on the screen more fuzzy and... *unclear*. Whenever I see it, I have to blink a few times because I feel like I need to try harder to focus on the text harder for it to be right.
I didn't even realize XP had an option to use ClearType for the whole system. Though now that I think about it, I think I might've noticed it in the visual options that I go through and deactivate most of when I fresh-install XP...

Well, I suppose last night, when I THOUGHT I posted this reply, I must not have really posted it, since it didn't appear.
When I set the frame rate to 640 x 480 x 75, and disabled Vsync, the game began to play just fine. I have no idea why the post doesn't appear in the thread. It's pretty hard not to post. Ok, now I see my comment, added as an edit. I should say, however, that the game plays fine if I start pSX natively. If I use the frontend, I still get slowdowns. |

Does this happen even when you set the frontend to close as soon as pSX starts?

Yes, It's just that it appears on the previous page since this lot have been so busy yakking about ClearType, donutbandit!
You & me would never go off topic like that, would we? ![]() I presume you haven't changed the relevant settings in the Frontend, then - don't forget there are no global settings there, each profile has to be changed individually. You can open psxfrontend.ini in a text editor and change the lot with Find/Replace All if you're careful. Make a backup first, though! I can't remember if there's a setting for VSync in the Windows version, but I think there is. |

Actually, there isn't an option for VSync. I remember requesting it, but Ultima said something about needing to find space for it, or wondering if it should be there in the first place. I still think it needs to be there though.
If nothing else, if people want the option and Ultima doesn't want to add it, I could write some kind of "add-on" program to allow the setting of VSync through his frontend.

ClearType has indeed improved in Vista.

Well, more problems. When I got to Corel Town, more slowdowns. Selecting Alt>Enter to go into full screen gave me a completely white page. I am once again running in reduced mode in 640 x 480 screen resolution. I don't mean in the emulator, I mean in my OS! The game runs well there, but if I want to x out to consult a walkthrough or FAQ, I am presented with huge pages. I can no longer run full screen, and I have huge slowdowns. At least this emulator will work, using a few tricks, but what could be causing this?

50 or 60Hz fps in a game is not nearly as bad as a static image, Vahious. It's looking at, say a desktop, a document or something like that that makes it noticeable.
I have to say that, at my respectable age, I'm not really into beat-em-ups at fast speeds - RPGs for me! :P @donutbandit: looking back through this thread, I think the problem may be with your videocard. Since you're using a VIA-based board with an AMD CPU, you need the correct (and up-to-date) chipset drivers to be installed to ensure that AGP is properly enabled for the card (I presume it's an integrated one?). It might be a good idea to download the current videocard driver and chipset driver (if it's an integrated card, they may be in the same package) for your board and OS and reinstall. VIA Arena is the place for VIA drivers. It may be necessary to uninstall the previous drivers first and, if you have separate drivers for the chipset and videocard, you must uninstall the previous videocard driver before updating the chipset drivers, and install/reinstall the videocard drivers afterward. This because if the AGP port driver isn't already installed when you install the videocard driver, the latter won't install properly. Hope you've either got this sorted already, or are still looking at this thread!
