Trouble with PSXFin crashing...
Yesterday, Windows decided to do an update and I also installed my Visual C++ 6.0, today, I am finding a number of programs are having trouble running, PSXFin is one of them.
I tried installing it in it's own folder with no settings other than the default and I get the standard Microsoft has encountered a problem and this program must be shut down error, at the moment, I can't trace the issue to a specific common item. EpsxE runs ok and so does PSXeven, MAME seems to run ok as well, I have tried many other programs, but a program/utility I used to turn direct x acceleration off while I played visual pinball tables seems to exhibit the same behavior, although if I turn direct x acceleration off when I want to play the tables, it doesn't crash, and yeah, I have direct x running when I try to load psxfin, and directx diag didn't show any errors when I ran tests on it. I'm running a 900mhz PC with 512 megs ram, 256 meg Nvidia AGP video card, sound blaster live, windows XP SP2. I don't know what the critical update was that windows installed, it did it in stealth mode. Other than installing Visual C++ 6.0, I haven't tinkered with my system for a while... I'll gladly tell you any other info about my system, but right now I'm confused...Any suggestions would be appreciated...

Hmm... that kind of problem can sometimes be caused by a virus infecting the program and then being removed... taking a piece of the program with it. Have you tried simply deleting that whole folder, and re-downloading it? I'm amusing by what you said that pSX itself doesn't offer any error message, which means that the problem is most likely not from within the problem, but rather either a problem with the .exe itself, or something with your system's software.
Another thing that has a slight possibility... are your sound card's drivers intact? Sometimes my SB Live! decides to randomly act like it's not installed, even though the drivers are there and reporting no problems. I end up having to fix the problem by simply reinstalling the drivers, at which point Windows remembers that it has a sound card and works fine. Visual C++ 6.0 wouldn't cause a problem, as I actually have that same exact thing installed on my computer, and pSX ran fine before and after installing it. Visual Studio 2005 doesn't cause problems either (which I have for compiling other source code only, because I don't know how to program in C++ using the 2005 style, which is *VERY* different than the style accepted by 6.0 (VS 2005 doesn't even understand code written in the style that 6.0 understands)).

Oddly enough if I reinstall PSXFin 1.10, it works, in its own folder or in my Playstation folder, but if I try to put PSxfin 1.11 in its own folder or in the Playstation folder, it crashes...
I'm confused... ???

Hmm... I have some small thoughts to add. One is to try and update DirectX to the latest version of DX9. Another... when that error box comes up, try clicking the option for more info, and report the file that it says caused the problem (which is usually a .dll file, but certainly not always). My last thought is... maybe you could try v1.12 WIP, which is stable I'd say (I ran it through some intense tests). You can download the WIP here. Hopefully that helps...

Quick question -- what's your main CPU? From what I can tell from other forum posts, 1.11 seems to fail on AMD Athlon chips -- and I know it did not work on mine either. So, if you have an Athlon PC, that may be the problem. I could not get the Windows or Linux version of 1.11 to work on my Athlon, but 1.10 works fine.
Cheers! |
