Slow loading to the battle sceens(FF8)

Everything is fine until a battle starts. The white that comes down the screen loads really slow, and then in the battle, its a little laggy.
(if it helps, i have it set to Pete's OpenGL Driver 1.76, and its auto detecting the FPS limit) What do i do to fix this?
