CD-ROM issue??

I recently downloaded several PSone emulators, and so far PSX seems to come closest to working. I don't think I have any issues with PSX, actually, it's my CD drive.

It appears to me that my DVD/CD-rom drive isn't recognizing the Playstation discs at all . I haven't been able to get any program to recognize their existence at all, even using Alcohol 52% to convert the game to an on-HDD ISO is impossible. I can convert PS2 discs to ISOs, and get them working with PS2 emulators, however.

I have a "ATAPI DVD A DH20A3P" DVD/CD-ROM and get a "CD not usable: Failed to initialise ASPI driver" error when trying to run ASPI, and a "CD not usable: Drive does not support IoControl" error when trying to run IoControl. I looked for a driver update through Windows, thinking perhaps that was the issue, however it claims I'm up-to-date. Any help or suggestions are sincerely appreciated. I'd not be too surprised if I'm simply making a ridiculously obvious oversight.

I think you're using (somehow) ePSXe, and the error you get is that because you've selected the ePSXe ASPI CDR plugin instead of WNT/W2K (while using winXP).
If no then sorry, carry on.

i believe that error usually means your system does not have an ASPI layer installed.

thats why i asked for the OS jonc.

Because if he was using XP, it would definitely have IOCTL, and if its using a 9x version then the only ASPI it can use is the one already in windows.

My OS is WIndows XP, home edition. Service pack 3, I think. I won't pretend to have any idea what an ASPI layer is.

hanibal81: it is almost surely not the program's fault, no program can detect the PSone discs at all.

mmm, its either a software (OS) faulty or a Hardware (which is more logical)...have you ever tried your PSone CDs in another CD/DVD Drive (a friend's PC as an example) ?

As it happens I had a chance to do so today and it worked like a charm. THat's only a little bothersome, since my 1 gb flashdrive can only move one disk at a time (I'm a final fantasy fan) and it's not often I get such an opportunity. I'll live with it, I guess. It does still seem strange to me that I couldn't get ti to work on my desktop, though. *shrugs* Thanks for your help, and if any of you still have thoughts as to how to fix the issue, please let me know.

Update your IDE busmaster drivers (usually a component of the Chipset driver packages)

You might be best off replacing your Optical Drive if possible, it might not support ioctl.

Maybe you guys are thinking about this too hard. It's possible that his drive simply doesn't support reading black discs. I have a "ATAPI DVD A DH16A3L" DVD/CD Burner, and it refuses to acknowledge the existance of any black disc I put in the drive. So far I've tried PS1 discs and CD-R discs that were black, and all yielded the same results.

@miri: I suspect that, with your drive being similar to mine, it has the same problem (certainly sounds like it from what you said). If that's the case, your only hope is to try updating the firmware to the latest version (modded or not is up to you, depending on availability and your needs). If that doesn't work, you're unfortunately out of luck and will probably need to buy a different drive.

I hate this drive that came in my new computer. After having this problem, I've already pulled my *good* DVD/CD burner out of the other computer and am ready to put it in this one. If you end up going the route of getting a new drive, make sure to look into it thoroughly before you make any decisions. There are a lot of good (and bad) drives out there, and lots of people talking about them. You can find some drives that are quite good for $50 and up in local computer/electronics stores (possibly cheaper if bought online).

Well said then.

Thank you all very much. I guess I'll just buy a new optical drive at some point.

@hanibal81: I wasn't trying to ignore what Squall said or anything, as I did notice what he said. I just wanted to make sure the advice got across, since there was a lot of talk about other possible issues and I figured that since I had the same problem, I'd make sure that the point got across...

@miri: Well, as stated by a couple of us before, you *could* try doing a firmware update on it, as there's a chance that could solve the problem (not to mention firmware updates on optical drives are almost always very good to do).

Ahh... alright then. Sometimes it's hard to tell things like that unless I know the person well... ^^
